Angra 2 nuclear power plant will be shut down for 22 days
The Angra 2 nuclear power plant located in Angra dos Reis – RJ, was disconnected from the National Interconnected System for fuel refueling on Monday, June 22nd.
Eletronuclear reported that due to the new coronavirus pandemic, it decided to reduce activities to the minimum necessary, keeping only the essentials for work at the unit. The forecast is that Angra 2's stoppage will last 22 days.
Eletronuclear explained in a note that it is taking advantage of the experience of nuclear power plants in other countries that are also making refueling and maintenance stops during this period.
According to the state-owned company, of the 4,5 activities required for a typical stoppage at the plant, only 1,1 actions will be carried out and the great challenge will be to perform about 20% of the activities of a typical stoppage with 15% of the staff normally available.
João Carlos da Cunha Bastos, Director of Operations and Marketing at Eletronuclear, informed that this will be an unprecedented shutdown, quite difficult and laborious, but that keeping the generation available is essential for Brazil in this serious moment that the country is experiencing and, also, to ensure the economic balance of the company.
