With Open Source Model, Elon Musk Promises That His Company xAI Will Surpass Google and Compete with Chinese Companies. Tech Rivalry Heats Up in the Global Artificial Intelligence Market.

Elon Musk has reignited the tech rivalry in the artificial intelligence sector with a bold statement. According to the billionaire, his company xAI is soon expected to surpass Google in the development of advanced AI models, positioning itself among the leaders in AI on a global scale.

The statement was made on Saturday, 23, in a post on the platform X (formerly Twitter). “Soon, xAI will be far beyond any company except Google, and then will significantly surpass Google,” Musk wrote, highlighting the growing competition in the AI sector.

The remark comes at a strategic moment, following the announcement that the Grok 2.5 model, developed by xAI, has become open source, meaning its source code is available for developers and researchers worldwide. The release of Grok 3, a more powerful version, is expected in the next six months.

xAI a Rival of Google? Musk Bets on Open Source and Competitive Performance

xAI, founded by Musk in 2023, is betting on the open source model as a differentiator to accelerate its evolution against the competition. The Grok 2.5, the company’s latest model, is already available for download on the Hugging Face platform, with detailed installation instructions.

Although it is accessible to the public, Grok 2.5 requires a robust infrastructure, including at least eight GPUs with more than 40 GB of memory each, as well as 500 GB of storage. This has led to criticism in the community, which considers the technical requirements too high for most developers.

According to xAI itself, Grok 2.5 achieves competitive performance against leading models like GPT-4 and Claude. In the Elo metric, used to measure performance in benchmarks such as GPQA (scientific knowledge), MMLU, and MMLU-Pro (general knowledge), the model surpasses competitors in several categories.

Chinese Artificial Intelligence Companies Are the Biggest Obstacles, Says Musk

Besides Google, Elon Musk points out that Chinese artificial intelligence companies represent the biggest challenge for xAI. “China has much more electricity than the US, and very strong companies in hardware manufacturing,” said the billionaire, emphasizing the energy and industrial advantages of the Asian country.

Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, Chinese tech giants, have already launched more than ten updates to AI models just in 2025. Baidu, for example, has expanded the data input limits and made its AI more interactive. Most of these companies are heavily betting on open source, aligning with the new global trend and positioning themselves as strong competitors in the global AI market.

Grok 2.5 Is Launched with AI Video Generation and a Focus on Constant Improvements

Along with the open source model, xAI has also released a Grok application update, now at version v1.1.58. The new version introduces AI video generation features, allowing the creation of visual content directly on the platform, something that could attract content creators, developers, and companies.

Elon Musk assured that the application will continue to evolve, with new features being implemented in parallel with the development of Grok 3. The plan is to keep the platform open, powerful, and customizable, in contrast to the more closed models of competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Grok’s Customized License Sparks Controversy Among Developers

Despite the promise of openness, the license used by xAI to release Grok 2.5 has come under criticism. According to AI engineer Tim Kellogg, the terms are customized and contain anticompetitive clauses, which contradict the more liberal principles of open source.

Companies like DeepSeek, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Qwen tend to adopt more transparent licenses, such as Apache 2.0 or MIT, which allow for broader reuse with fewer restrictions. The lack of disclosure of the exact parameters of the model on Hugging Face has also raised doubts about the true openness of xAI.

Grok Has Already Been Involved in Controversies with Controversial Responses

This is not the first time the Grok platform has made headlines. In May, the chatbot was accused of giving controversial responses about the Holocaust and conspiracy theories, such as the so-called “white genocide” in South Africa. In one response, Grok even described itself as “MechaHitler,” generating outrage.

Musk reacted by stating that Grok “seeks the truth” and that mistakes are part of the learning process. However, critics argue that these responses may reflect biases stemming from the X social network itself, where Musk is active and often involved in controversial topics.

The Global AI Market Is in a Race for Leadership and Technological Dominance

The competition between xAI vs Google goes beyond technology — it is a geopolitical and strategic race. While Western companies compete with closed and more expensive models, Chinese companies are accelerating with affordable hardware, massive energy infrastructure, and public policies favorable to AI.

For Musk, xAI will be the new global protagonist, but to achieve this, it will need to overcome two formidable obstacles: Google, still the consolidated leader, and the Chinese AI ecosystem, which continues to grow.
