In central Texas, about 30 minutes east of Austin, a new reality is beginning to take shape. Along Farm-to-Market Road 1209, corporate facilities are emerging that, at first glance, seem out of place in the pastoral landscape.
However, these metal warehouses house the offices of X (formerly Twitter), the growing headquarters of the Boring Company, and a SpaceX unit dedicated to producing equipment for Starlink — Musk’s satellite internet.
An Empire in Formation in the Texas Interior
Musk’s venture is far from small. In addition to the facilities in Bastrop, SpaceX also operates in Cameron County, south of the state, where a request is pending to create a new city called Starbase.
The entrepreneur’s vision is ambitious: to transform Texas into a self-sustaining tech hub with legislation favorable to entrepreneurship.
Documents reveal that the central building of the complex will be the headquarters of X. Nearby, the Boring Company brand stands out, and across the road, SpaceX’s facility is growing.
Although simple at first glance, the project includes elements like the Hyperloop Plaza, which houses a café, bar, souvenir shop, and even a beauty salon — a kind of planned mini-city.
Political and Ideological Reasons Behind the Move
The choice of Texas goes beyond logistical or economic issues. Elon Musk has made it clear that his departure from California is directly related to disagreements with the state’s progressive policies.
One of the triggers was the passing of a law that restricts teachers’ autonomy regarding students’ gender identity — a topic that personally touches the businessman, who has distanced himself from his transgender daughter.
This ideological shift has brought him closer to the Republican Party and figures like President Donald Trump.
In various interviews, Musk has positioned himself against what he calls the “woke virus,” criticizing identity policies and advocating for meritocracy and freedom of expression.
The Local Impact in Bastrop: Growth and Concern
Musk’s arrival has divided the residents of Bastrop, a town with just over 12,000 inhabitants.
For some, the presence of the magnate and his companies represents opportunity and development. Sylvia Carrillo, the town administrator, states that there is enthusiasm about the jobs created, especially for the children and grandchildren of residents.
However, she also acknowledges some residents’ apprehension about the rapid urbanization of the rural area and the loss of local identity.
Even though the ventures are outside the official limits of the town, Texas legislation allows Bastrop some influence over development, leading it to adopt control measures such as limiting housing density and creating public green spaces.
Community reactions are varied. Judy Enis, a local museum volunteer, notes that the area has faced cycles of growth and recession over the decades, like in the timber and coal industries. The arrival of Musk, she says, is just another phase — albeit a more intense one.
For Judah Ross, a realtor in Bastrop, the outcome is positive. “I will always be biased because I want to grow. But I love it here and want to be part of it. At the very least, the good thing is the number of jobs it is generating. Last year, I sold [homes] to people working at Boring and SpaceX.”
On the other hand, there are environmental concerns. The Boring Company has been fined nearly R$ 63,000 for violations relating to water pollution.
Initially, the company planned to discharge waste into the Colorado River, but after community pressure, it agreed to treat the effluents at the town’s sewage treatment plant.
Despite the project’s size, housing infrastructure to accommodate workers is still in its early stages. The promise to build more than 100 homes has not materialized, and so far, housing consists of temporary trailers.
Carrillo states that any large-scale housing project will still take at least a year to materialize. In the meantime, the trailers set up behind the Boring Bodega building serve as a temporary solution.
Million-Dollar Incentives and Tax Benefits
Elon Musk’s project is not being financed solely with private capital. The Texas government approved an incentive of US$ 17.3 million (about R$ 102 million) to support SpaceX’s growth in Bastrop, with the expectation of generating 400 new jobs and attracting more than R$ 1.6 billion in investments.
Additionally, the company has requested the creation of a free trade zone, a measure that would facilitate the transit of materials and equipment, exempting them from tariffs.
Although this represents a loss of R$ 260,000 in revenue for the county this year, local authorities support the proposal, believing that the economic benefits outweigh the costs.

The figure of Elon Musk, with his global reputation and controversies, does not go unnoticed in a small and traditionally conservative town.
On social media, criticisms are more intense than in real life. “They are going to destroy everything around here,” wrote a resident in an online forum.
However, according to Carrillo, personal reactions are more measured and focused on the practical impact of the venture.
She emphasizes that Musk’s companies have acted as good corporate citizens so far, and hopes this will continue. To protect Bastrop, measures have been implemented to ensure that urban growth does not compromise the town’s historical essence.
