Embraer Is Revolutionizing National Military Aviation by Building Jets in Brazilian Territory for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

On Wednesday (10), President Lula was present at the factory of the new Gripen fighters of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), produced by Embraer in Gavião Peixoto (SP). The patent of the aircraft belongs to Saab, a Swedish company that signed a contract with the FAB for the delivery of 36 units by 2027, in addition to technology sharing for local production.

Military Aviation Models Are Developed for Specialized Attacks

The first batch, which will consist of four supersonic jets produced by Embraer, model F-39E, arrived last year. The military aviation vehicles of the FAB were showcased in Linkoping, southern Sweden, and were shipped to Brazil on cargo ships.

The fighters were developed for specialized attacks, as well as military training. Their development was carried out by engineers from Embraer and Saab. It is worth noting that of the 36 aircraft promised, 8 are of this model. The 5-year contract was signed for approximately US$ 5.4 billion, which, at the current exchange rate, translates to R$ 30 billion.

The Brazilian investment covers logistical support to Saab, technology transfer from Embraer, and the military aviation armament necessary for the operation of FAB simulators and jets. The estimate is that the last of the vehicles will leave the factory as early as next year.

The contract was originally closed in August 2015, when the financing of the aircraft was settled for 25 years, concluding payment in this way by 2040. According to the FAB, the new models from Embraer and Saab will be used for three decades, and the Gripen will be the last; that is, after it, no other foreign jet of this type will be supplied to Brazil, since their production will be done by Embraer in national territory.

Details of the New Military Aviation Model from FAB

The information was provided by an unnamed Air Force official in 2021. According to him, at the time, the next aircraft that the FAB will need to be concerned about around 2035 will be entirely domestic, from conception to production, and the advent of the Gripen will be decisive in the process.

The F-39E features a single seat and is equipped with software that identifies all types of armaments used. The model produced by Embraer needs only 15 minutes to be prepared on the ground; with 5 technicians, they rearm and refuel it between missions.

The model can reach nearly 2.4 Mach and allows shots from 100 km to 200 km from the target, updating the course mid-flight. It measures 14.1 m in length, 8.4 m in wingspan, and 4.5 m in height. Additionally, it is equipped with a Mauser BK-27 cannon, capable of firing 1,700 times per minute and accommodates various types of missiles.

Another interesting highlight of the aircraft is its hourly flight cost, significantly cheaper: US$ 4,500. To put this in perspective, the F-35 Lightning, the most advanced aircraft of the U.S., has an hourly cost of US$ 35,000.

Get to Know Embraer Better

Embraer emerged from the dream of transforming Brazil into a country with the best technology in the aviation sector.

The company is currently the third largest manufacturer of commercial jets in the world, employing 18,000 people and having delivered over 8,000 aircraft. This is only possible due to its knowledge shared among various areas, from the heritage of the highest learning, combined with the restlessness for performance that Embraer carries.
