In search of proposals for new power plants
The arrays will be built in the largest water reservoir in the state, which houses an 880 MW hydroelectric plant. The plant supplies electricity to around 1,8 million people and is also used for fishing and swimming. EMAE seeks proposals for projects from 1 MW to 30 MW. The facilities will sell power in both the regulated and free markets, the company said.
A pilot project that has already been developed at the dam has demonstrated the feasibility of floating projects in the chosen location, EMAE said. Interested developers have until December 9 to submit their proposals.
Advantages of the floating plant
Brazil hosts another 1 MW floating solar plant at Barragem de Sobradinho, a 175 MW hydroelectric plant on the São Francisco River in Sobradinho, in the state of Bahia.
The project, which will be expanded to 5 MW, was launched by the company in 2016. Chesf has also installed a pilot floating photovoltaic array at the Balbina Dam, a hydroelectric plant and power plant on the Uatuma River in the Amazon rainforest.
Floating PV offers particular advantages in Brazil, as floating PV modules and mounting structures can help reduce evaporation from already challenging water supplies. They can also boost electricity supply during droughts.
