The Largest Electric Ferry In The World Is Set To Begin Operation In 2025.
Incat Tasmanian, an Australian shipbuilding company, is close to showcasing its first and largest electric ferry in the world. The model is named Utility Ro-Pax and is powered by two electric motors of 5 to 9 ME, measuring about 148 meters and able to carry more than 2,000 passengers and up to 226 vehicles.
Electric Ferry Will Have A Range Of 186 Km
The vessel will first arrive in South America and will be operated by the company Buquebus to transport passengers between Argentina and Uruguay, sailing at 46 km/h, equivalent to 25 knots, with an estimated range of 185 km or 100 nautical miles.
Initially, the largest electric ferry in the world was developed to be powered by LNG, but Incat ended up opting for a more sustainable solution.

Caoa Chery Tiggo 5X skyrockets in sales in Brazil: a 2,318% increase and waiting lists of up to 4 months to acquire the model.
Despite the changes to electric propulsion requiring significant alterations, the company has yet to make the ship lighter, swapping 500 tons of equipment and fuel tanks for 400 tons of batteries, not to mention the use of aluminum instead of steel in its construction.
According to Robert Clifford, founder of Incat Group, considering that zero-emission transport is the focus for the future, the new vessel is ready to revolutionize the maritime transport industry worldwide. Peter Gutwein, strategic advisor at Incat, further emphasizes that the delivery of the world’s first battery-electric ferry to Buquebus could open doors for exponential expansion in the international market for lightweight electric vessels.
Solar Energy Also Gains Attention In The Ship Industry
The electric ferry also reduces costs, and according to Peter, the world is looking for large, lightweight ships with zero emissions. The company is already looking to expand its workforce and facilities to prepare for what will be significant growth.
The final price of the ship, along with the official delivery date, has yet to be revealed by Incat. It’s worth mentioning that the sector for more sophisticated and sustainable vessels is becoming increasingly active. Currently, several brands have already presented impressive and fully electric concepts, as is the case with Incat.
In addition to the electric ferry, the Polish company Sunreef, well-known in the catamaran sector, developed the Sunreef 80 Power Eco which, besides its size and extravagant appearance, stands out for its innovative configuration that combines electric propulsion and solar energy, something that has attracted the interest of several millionaires.
Solar-Powered Boat Costs R$ 50 Million
Covered with 200 m² of solar panels, the model is the largest ever made by the company, measuring no less than 23.8 meters in length. Its batteries power two motors of 180 kW each, and the solar panels can generate about 40 kWp. Thus, if preferred, the buyer can add a hybrid propulsion system.
According to the responsible party, the model is equipped with batteries that are 30% lighter than standard ones, which, alongside solar energy, provides nearly unlimited range. In addition to sailing with zero emissions, the new boat is also developed with sustainably sourced materials. A customer from the USA already purchased the first unit at the end of 2021.
Another unit sold will be delivered in two years. The starting price of the innovative ship is almost US$ 9.5 million, which can easily exceed that amount depending on customizations requested by the future owner.
