Enel Brasil Signed an Agreement with the Government of the State of Bahia for the Construction of Future Green Hydrogen Projects. This is the First Document Signed by the Company for Such Undertakings in Brazil.

Enel Brasil and the Government of the State of Bahia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday (04/12) for feasibility studies for projects for the production of green hydrogen in the state, by Enel Green Power Brasil, a renewable energy company of the Enel Group. The studies will evaluate the technical, financial, and commercial sectors for the undertaking. The partnership with the Government of the State of Bahia aims to join forces to analyze the assumptions that influence the viability of projects for the production of fuel in the state, encouraging the future advancement of the entire chain in the region. The memorandum from Enel Brasil with the government is for one year, with the possibility of extension.

Enel Brasil Believes in Green Hydrogen as a Means to Accelerate Decarbonization

According to the results of the feasibility studies in Bahia, the company will define, through its business strategy and based on technical criteria, potential projects, deadlines for execution, and the value of its investments.

According to Roberta Bonomi, who is leading the project at Enel Brasil, the company believes in green hydrogen as an excellent complementary strategic tool to propel decarbonization, especially for specific economic activities that, for economic and specific reasons, cannot use electrification through renewable sources like green hydrogen in their production processes.

The executive emphasizes the case of the chemical industry, which has a strong presence in Bahia. Currently, Enel Brasil is the largest operator of wind and solar energy in Brazil and plans to play an important role in the green hydrogen market in the near future, generating various jobs and opportunities for economic and social development.

Memorandum of Understanding Is Part of Enel Brasil’s Global Viability Efforts

According to Bonomi, Brazil is already a powerhouse in renewable energy generation, and Enel Brasil believes that the production of hydrogen based on completely clean energy will be a significant competitive advantage for the country as production costs are related to this technology.

The memorandum of understanding with the government of the state of Bahia is the first of its kind signed by the company in Brazil and is part of the company’s global efforts to promote the economic and technical viability of this type of solution in the countries where it operates.

Enel Green Power creates and operates clean energy plants worldwide and is present in Europe, Africa, the Americas, Oceania, and Asia. As a global leader in renewable energy, with a total capacity of approximately 54 GW and a generation mix that includes solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy, as well as energy storage installations.
