The Australian multinational Fortescue, after signing the investment memorandum with the Government of the State of Ceará, plans to build the company’s first green hydrogen plant in the world. The estimate is that around US$ 5.8 billion will be invested in the state. The information was revealed exclusively by Camilo Santana, Governor of Ceará. According to the State manager, Fortescue’s goal is to produce, in Ceará, the fuel that is presenting itself as a bet of the new global energy matrix. The State Governor, Camilo Santana (PT), discussed the topic in an interview with O POVO CBN radio on the morning of Thursday, March 31.
Fortescue Representatives Will Come to Ceará Later This Year
According to Camilo Santana, Ceará can produce and supply the fuel of the future to the entire European continent. The governor also emphasizes Ceará’s potential as a future energy exporter to the world, starting from the Pecém complex. In addition, Camilo highlighted the more than 18 memorandums that the state has accumulated in investments for the construction of green hydrogen plants and that, in the near future, these resources will begin to be allocated in Ceará’s economy.
According to the Executive Secretary of the Civil House of Ceará, Célio Fernando, in a social media post, to boost the start of construction of the green hydrogen plant in Ceará, representatives of the Fortescue multinational would travel to Ceará this week to make the project come to fruition, but due to the commitments of the multinational representatives in Germany and France, the visit was postponed to June without harming the ongoing schedule.

Agustin Pichot, the multinational’s president for Latin America, recognized Ceará’s potential regarding renewable energy and stated that the state has great port infrastructure and strategic location.
The agreement for the construction of the green hydrogen plant will allow the country’s energy transition for decarbonization. The plant will be part of the green hydrogen Hub in the Pecém industrial and port complex. The company’s estimates are that operations will start in 2025 and that, by 2030, 15 million tons of the fuel will be produced.
