The Trophic Cascade: When Removing One Invader Releases Another
Over time, it became clear that the problem wasn’t “just” rats. Ecologists referred to the phenomenon as a trophic cascade, a chain reaction in which manipulating one level of the ecosystem brings down several others.
From 1985, a campaign began to eliminate the cats. Some birds began to reappear, but without predators, the rabbits exploded and devoured what was left of green, worsening the erosion.
And with less natural control, the very population of rats and mice resumed pressing on eggs, seeds, and what remained of the ecosystem.
The Extreme Operation: Poison, Hunts And Dogs
It reached a point where there was only one way out: to remove every invasive animal from Macquarie Island. The logic was brutal and simple: just one rat or one rabbit surviving would restart the collapse.
The final phase included intense searches with trained dogs, capable of detecting both old and recent signs of rats, mice, and rabbits, scouring valleys, caves, and crevices like searching for a needle in a haystack.
The Day The Island Became Free Of Rats And The Recovery Was Surprising
After years of work, Macquarie Island was declared free of pests, with no rats, mice, or rabbits, after a mandatory period without sightings.
The recovery began from the ground up: plants previously restricted to protected areas began to sprout spontaneously, with dormant seeds “awakening.”
Then came clearer signs, such as dense vegetation returning, paths reopened by penguins, and rare species reappearing.
Today, protection is strict, with inspections of vessels, cleaning of equipment, and measures to prevent rats from re-entering. The lesson is straightforward: prevention costs little compared to the price of rebuilding an entire ecosystem.
