With Hundreds of Millions Invested, A Northeastern State Is Advancing in Nine Essential Works to Improve Logistics Infrastructure, Creating Jobs and Accelerating Regional Development. Understand the Impact of These Initiatives!
The Brazilian Northeast is taking an important step in logistics development, with the advancement of nine essential works to address infrastructure bottlenecks that have hindered the region’s growth.
These initiatives, which total hundreds of millions in investments, aim to modernize roads in the Northeast, ports, and other means of transportation, opening new opportunities for the local economy and generating numerous direct and indirect jobs.
The Government of Piauí has been making significant advances in essential infrastructure works, which promise to transform the logistics and economic picture of the state.

The chamber approves a project that transforms plots of up to 2,000 square meters into official rural properties, allowing thousands of small producers who were invisible to the government to now access credit, tax exemptions, and technical assistance.
-
Factory 52, in the USA, cost over $5 billion, covers 270,000 square meters, and manufactures cutting-edge chips: it was named Project of the Year by the world’s largest engineering magazine, marking the global race for semiconductors.

The two largest powers of BRICS are putting rivalries aside: China and India are making historic advances in rapprochement and plan to use their consecutive presidencies of the bloc to deepen ties and reshape the global balance of power.
Among the ongoing projects are the completion of highways, the first phase of the Port of Luís Correia, and the revitalization of the Parnaíba River waterway, which are fundamental to expand transportation options and the flow of Piauí’s production.
These works aim to solve logistical bottlenecks that impact the productivity and competitiveness of the state, as indicated by a recent report from the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). The document, titled “Infrastructure Panorama – Northeast Edition“, highlights that Piauí faces structural challenges that affect the industrial and agricultural development of the region.

Priority Works for the Logistics Development of Piauí and the Northeast
The CNI report listed nine essential works for Piauí, five of which are the responsibility of the state government and four of the federal government. The administration of Governor Rafael Fonteles is already working on the execution of these projects.
Among the highlighted works are BRs 135/PI and 330/PI, the Transcerrados highway (PI-397), the Palestina highway (PI-262), the PI-459, the Eliseu Martins (PI) – Porto Nacional (TO) Railway Branch, the Port of Luís Correia, the Parnaíba Waterway, and the Equatorial Margin. Below are detailed some of these initiatives that are changing the infrastructure landscape of Piauí.
Transcerrados Highway: Axis for Agribusiness
The concession of the Transcerrados highway is vital for the flow of production from the Piauí Cerrado. The first phase, with a length of 236 km and 40.8 km of the Palestina road, is already in operation, featuring user support services such as towing and assistance.
The responsible concessionaire has so far invested R$ 300 million of the R$ 650 million planned for improvements and maintenance of the stretch, including four toll plazas.
PI-459: Interstate Connectivity with Pernambuco
The asphalting of the PI-459, which connects Betânia do Piauí to Santa Filomena in Pernambuco, involves an investment of R$ 23.7 million. The work is in the earthmoving, fence relocation, and culvert construction phase, and will have a length of 20.6 km. This interstate connection will bring not only local economic benefits but will also facilitate integration between the two states.
New Piauí-Ceará Connection
The interstate connection project between Assunção do Piauí and Quiterianópolis in Ceará is another highlight. The works, which began in April 2024, cover a length of 17.893 km and have an estimated cost of R$ 27.7 million. Executed by the Piauí Department of Highways (DER), the project uses resources from the State Treasury and is already 35.61% complete, with completion expected in August 2025.
Parnaíba Waterway: Potential for Navigation and Sustainability
The construction of the Parnaíba Waterway is in an advanced planning phase, with the completion of executive projects on the stretch between Uruçuí and Luís Correia. The project, developed by the Piauí Railway and Logistics Company (CFLP), aims to revitalize the navigability of the river, ensuring both river transport and environmental preservation of the state’s main watercourse.
The revitalization of the Parnaíba is an important step for the transport of heavy cargo, in addition to opening opportunities for tourism and local activities that depend on the river. This initiative, along with other infrastructure works, aligns the state with CNI’s recommendations to strengthen the local economy and promote sustainability.
Port of Luís Correia: Expanding Port Complex
The Port Complex of Luís Correia is one of the main ongoing projects in Piauí. With 71.5% of the docking pier completed, the expectation is that the final works will be ready by December 2024. The port’s support area, known as the retro area, is expected to be completed by May 2025. The total value of the works amounts to R$ 121.5 million, representing a robust investment in the state’s port logistics.
The Port of Luís Correia will be strategic for the flow of agricultural production from the Cerrado and for import and export operations, also featuring a Private Use Terminal (TUP), which will attract private investments and increase the competitiveness of the local economy.
Works Enhance the Economic Potential of Piauí and the Northeast
Despite the challenges, the CNI study identifies Piauí as a state with enormous potential in strategic sectors. Situated in the Matopiba region (formed by areas of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia), Piauí is part of the “equatorial margin,” an area with great potential for oil and gas exploration. Additionally, the state stands out as one of Brazil’s largest producers of solar and wind energy.
The geographic positioning and the government’s initiatives to promote infrastructure can make Piauí a logistics and industrial hub in the Brazilian Northeast. The ongoing works are the state government’s response to the logistical bottlenecks that impede full economic development, while simultaneously creating an attractive environment for new investments.
The Government of Piauí is demonstrating remarkable commitment to developing robust and efficient infrastructure. With projects such as the Parnaíba Waterway, the concession of the Transcerrados highway, and the expansion of the Port of Luís Correia, the state is paving the way to become a prominent logistics and industrial center in Brazil.
These initiatives are more than infrastructure works: they represent a strategic step to integrate the state into the national and international export scenario and to ensure sustainable economic development. With the support of the government and ongoing investments, Piauí has the potential to overcome obstacles and position itself as an important economic hub in the Northeast.
