Even Without a Date for Opening Job Vacancies, Brasfels Shipyard Plans to Call 5,000 Metalworkers for Works Started Between December 2021 and January 2022.

Last Thursday (26), Brasfels Shipyard, located in Angra dos Reis, announced that the forecast is to hire 5,000 metalworkers to continue the works of the FPSO P-80. The period for applications or hiring for these job vacancies has not yet been determined. However, the works are expected to begin in December of this year, or only in January of the coming year. These hires are the result of several demands that occurred to promote greater activity in the shipyards of Rio de Janeiro.

The Expectation Is That Job Vacancies Generated by Brasfels Shipyard for Metalworkers in Rio de Janeiro Will Be Opened Still in 2021

According to some forecasts from the Federation of Industries of the State (Firjan), in the next three years, the expectation is that the oil and gas sector will be able to raise R$ 50 billion for Rio de Janeiro. This amount was obtained based on simulations, including the development of the following activities during this period: exploration, production, and supply.

In May, an agreement was reached between Petrobras and Keppel Shipyard for the FPSO P-78, located in the Búzios field, in the pre-salt area of the Santos Basin, to begin its construction. Therefore, after its completion, it is expected that the platform will only start producing in 2024. Daily, it is expected to produce 7.2 million m³ of gas and 180,000 barrels of oil.

The hiring of 5,000 metalworkers to work in the shipyards of Rio de Janeiro is an agreement that benefits both sides. For State Deputy Waldeck Carneiro (PT), “these initiatives bring hope to thousands of families who depend on the metalworking industry in Angra dos Reis, Niterói, São Gonçalo, Itaguaí, Itaboraí, and other cities that have already experienced golden times with the construction of platforms, rigs, and other activities linked to this productive chain.”

Seeking ways to strengthen and generate more job vacancies for metalworkers to work at Brasfels Shipyard, State Deputies Célia Jordão (Patriota) and Luiz Paulo (Cidadania) proposed Bill 4698/201, which aims to create the State Policy for the Marine Economy in Rio de Janeiro. Thus, the Law aims not only at creating new job vacancies but also at ensuring that the local economy is developed in a rational and sustainable way, not only looking at profits.

Why Is It Important for the Law to Be Approved?

Thus, Bill 4698/201 was sent for the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) to evaluate and decide whether it will be approved or not. For the deputies, the ideal would be for the Executive Power to promote a Productive and Technological Cluster that could generate greater development over the next nine years, aiming to reverse the current situation in which the sector is stagnant.

Attempting to intervene to ensure that the marine economy grows positively at Brasfels Shipyard and others, the president of the Special Commission for Naval Industry, Offshore, and Oil and Gas at Alerj, Célia Jordão, sent her proposal for this development to occur at the state level, so that, with the local economy, unemployed professionals have a new opportunity.

“I brought to the attention of the State Government the work of the Naval Industry Commission. Together with the Naval Technological Cluster, we presented a governance proposal to conduct these debates. It is a segment that can generate many jobs, which is fundamental to recover our state’s economy,” says Célia.
