In volume, Brazil’s coffee exports reached 39.35 million 60kg bags of coffee, a decline of 3.1% compared to 2021. The data comes from the statistical report of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).

In the first six months of the 2022/23 harvest, national shipments reached 19.341 million bags, generating US$ 4.576 billion in domestic revenue, a decline of 1.7% in volume, but an increase of 31.5% in revenue. According to the president of Cecafé, Márcio Ferreira, the record revenue for 2022 reflects the rise in product prices and the favorable exchange rate. “The commercial dollar quote remained above R$ 5 for most of last year, and coffee prices remained at a satisfactory level until they recently started to fall. As such, the average price per bag is US$ 234.64, the highest level in the last five years and the highest of the year, with an increase of 52% compared to the previous year,” he commented.

Destinations of Brazil’s Coffee Exports
Of the 10 main destinations for Brazilian coffee in the previous year, only Japan did not record growth. The United States topped the list of main destinations for this product in 2022, importing 7.985 million bags, 2.1% more than in 2021, accounting for 20.3% of the total. This was followed by Germany with 6.844 million bags (+4.2% and 17.4%, respectively); Italy, 3.355 million (+13.7%/8.5%); Belgium, 2.921 million bags (+2.7%/7.4% of the total); Japan imported 2.873 million bags (-25.5%/4.8%).
Exports to the region fell last year due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Eastern Europe imported 1.113 million bags of coffee from Brazil, a decrease of 45.3% compared to 2021. Only Russia saw a decline of 46.6%, with its purchases dropping to 650.174 bags in 2022, down from 1.217 million bags the previous year. As a result, Russia falls from sixth place in the ranking to fifteenth.
Types of Coffee on Brazil’s Export List
The largest export volume accumulated in 2022 is Arabica coffee, with shipments of 34.077 million bags, representing 86.6%. Shipments of instant coffee totaled 3.725 million bags, representing 9.5%.
Followed by edamame (robusta + conilon), 1.501 million bags (3.8%) were exported, and roasted and ground products amounted to 47.747 bags (0.1%). The differentiated coffee with superior quality or some certification of sustainable practices will represent 17% of the total Brazilian product exports in 2022, totaling 6.703 million bags. This represents a decline of 12.6% compared to the 7.669 million bags shipped from the country last year.
