At the beginning of this month, the container terminal of the Port of Salvador, a trading unit of Wilson Sons, broke the record of 110 containers handled per hour, this happened during the operation of the ship Corcovado, which was anchored at the new wharf of Santa Dulce dos Pobres, certified by the Brazilian Navy at the end of 2022.
In January 2018, the last record occurred, with about 102 mph. With movements of 37 per hour, the average productivity achieved by the Super Post-Panamax quay cranes accomplished something unprecedented. This is considered the best performance among the terminals in the Northeast.
The executive director of Tecon Salvador, Demir Lourenço, reports that there have been recent investments in infrastructure to increase service capacity and, with technological efficiency, security, and even operational efficiency, which are responsible for placing the Bahian terminal among the most productive and attractive in Brazil.
“The high number of container movements per hour is directly related to these investments, including the start of operations at the new wharfs, Santa Dulce dos Pobres, for which we acquired the most modern cranes available on the market, with a reach of 66 meters and a lifting capacity of 51 meters, enabling the lifting of up to 80 tons at a time. These machines are similar to those used in the largest ports in the world, such as Rotterdam and Los Angeles, for example,” highlights the director.

Why can the crane operator only obey the correct signalman on the construction site: among dozens of workers, a hand raised by the wrong person can confuse the maneuver and turn a load of tons into an immediate risk.

To optimize processes, including cargo management for yards and ships, Tecon Salvador has a management software that is one of the leaders in the global market for terminals in the Americas, Asia, and Europe, the NAVIS N4. This resource increases accessibility for all who somehow use the terminal, being responsible for the agility in receiving trucks, which take about 40 minutes from the sorting area to gate out.
The technological support, along with the absence of queues for ships at the port, with all energy systems, modern electrical equipment, and also the strong investment in the capacity of its professionals – in 2022 there were over 6,000 hours of training – result in improved satisfaction for clients of the port of Salvador.
“Having greater productivity per hour reduces the time a ship stays at the terminal, generating lower costs for ship owners (operators), contributing to meeting deadlines for new calls at other ports. Among the indicators, these elements reinforce our operational efficiency to the market and consolidate the competitiveness of the Bahian terminal as an attractive logistical solution for the foreign trade chain that connects Brazil to the world,” concludes Lourenço.
