BMW Already Uses A Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant At Its Factory Located In Santa Catarina, With A Renewable Generation Of 788MWh
The BMW Group factory in Araquari, located in the state of Santa Catarina, reaches its first 7 years not only focused on producing premium vehicles but also with even bolder sustainability goals and practical actions. Among BMW’s sustainability actions at the factory in Santa Catarina is the expansion of the volume of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the assembly building, from 562 to 1,372, with the addition of 810 in 2020. BMW’s Factory Is An Example Of Sustainability
Otávio Rodacoswiski, director of the factory in Araquari, Santa Catarina, said that one of his challenges as the new director of the factory is to ensure that the plant continues to be an example of sustainability actions for the BMW Group worldwide. “I am confident that our team takes on this challenge and is inspired by its results to continue standing out even more in this social responsibility,” emphasizes the executive.
In addition to new projects, the BMW factory continues to aim to reduce the annual numbers of natural resource usage. In one year, the unit has been working to reduce its environmental impact and managed to decrease energy consumption by over 3,000 MWh, water consumption by more than 1.9 million liters, and the amount of waste for disposal by over 6 tons. From 2016 to 2020, these figures are even more remarkable. Energy consumption was reduced by less than 33%, water consumption by less than 41%, and waste for disposal by less than 87%.

Sustainable Projects
Among the sustainability actions implemented by the plant is the expansion of the number of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the assembly building. From 562 to 1,372 panels, with the addition of 810 panels to those already installed in 2020. The annual energy generation from the panels increases to 788MWh, and the contribution to the CO2 emission reduction goal reaches 20%. It is worth noting that production in Araquari is already carbon-neutral. This is made possible through emissions compensation established with the wind farm in Morrinhos, Bahia.
The local team, in partnership with the Strategic Research Center in Solar Energy at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Grupo Solvi, and Energy Source, has developed a charging concept for electric cars powered by solar energy, free from the public power grid and providing second life to high-voltage batteries. This initiative is pioneering and encourages the reuse of high-voltage batteries to optimize the expansion of sustainable electric mobility. Studies are being conducted to optimize the proposal, in partnership with companies and institutes involved in the project.
Recently, BMW Announced New Projects And Investments At The Araquari Factory In Santa Catarina
The CEO of BMW Group, Alexander Wehr, recently stated that he is confident in increasing production at the Araquari factory, located in the state of Santa Catarina. The executive also says that the company is celebrating good results in Latin America, with Brazil leading performance after increasing sales by nearly 43% in 2020 and escaping the crisis brought to the country by the coronavirus pandemic.
Alexander Wehr, CEO of the German group, said that Brazil leads performance after increasing sales by nearly 43% in 2020 and escaping the crisis brought to the country by the coronavirus pandemic, comfortably leading the premium automobile market with a share of over 30% in segment sales. While many countries in the region will take two to three years to recover, Brazil is the only place in the world where we have already grown more than in the pre-pandemic period,” says the BMW executive.
