BMW already uses at the factory located in Santa Catarina, a photovoltaic solar power plant, which has a renewable generation of 788MWh
The BMW Group factory in Araquari, located in the state of Santa Catarina, reaches its first 7 years not only focused on producing premium vehicles, but also with even bolder sustainability goals and practical actions. Among BMW's sustainability actions at the plant in Santa Catarina is the expansion of the volume of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the assembly building, from 562 to 1, with the addition of 372 in 810. The BMW factory is an example of sustainability
Otávio Rodacoswiski, plant director in Araquari, Santa Catarina, said that one of his challenges as the new plant director is that the plant continues to be an example of sustainability actions for the BMW Group worldwide. “I am sure that our team takes on this challenge and is inspired by its results to continue to stand out even more in this social responsibility”, emphasizes the executive.
In addition to the new projects, the BMW plant continues with the goal of annually reducing the number of uses of natural resources. In one year, the unit continued to seek to reduce its environmental impact and managed to reduce energy consumption by more than 3000 MWh, water consumption by more than 1,9 million liters and the amount of waste for disposal by more than 6 tons. In the accumulated from 2016 to 2020 these numbers are even more remarkable. Energy consumption was reduced by less than 33%, water consumption by less than 41% and waste for disposal by less than 87%.
sustainable projects
Among the sustainability actions put into practice by the plant is the increase in the number of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the assembly building. From 562 to 1.372 slabs, with the addition of 810 slabs to those already installed in 2020. The annual energy generation with the slabs increases to 788MWh and the contribution to the goal of reducing CO2 emissions reaches 20%. It is worth remembering that Araquari's production is already neutral in terms of CO2 emissions. This is possible through the offsetting of emissions signed with the Morrinhos wind farm, in Bahia.
The local team, in partnership with the Center for Strategic Research in Solar Energy at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), the Solvi Group and Energy Source, developed a charging concept for electric cars powered by solar energy, free from the public grid. of energy and which gives a second life to high voltage batteries. This initiative is a pioneer and encourages the reuse of high voltage batteries to optimize the expansion of sustainable electric mobility. Studies are being carried out to optimize the proposal, together with companies and institutes that are part of the project.
Recently, BMW announced new projects and investments in the Araquari factory, in Santa Catarina
BMW Group CEO Alexander Wehr recently said he is confident of increasing production at the Araquari plant, located in the state of Santa Catarina.
