Fafen, Former Fertilizer Factory of Petrobras Acquired by Petrochemical Unigel in Sergipe, Resumes Production and Promises to Generate Over 1500 Jobs

After almost two years closed, the former Nitrogen Fertilizer Factory (Fafen) of the Brazilian oil company Petrobras, acquired by petrochemical Unigel and located in the municipality of Laranjeiras, Sergipe, was reactivated at the beginning of April! The fertilizer factory is back in full swing with accelerated production and promises to generate over 1500 job openings for professionals in the region.

Currently, the fertilizer factory controlled by the Unigel is generating 500 direct jobs and, according to the State Secretariat for Economic Development, Science and Technology, it is expected to generate another 1500 indirect job openings.

“Truck loaders, food service providers for drivers, truck maintenance, which is a highly requested service in the state,” said Secretary José Augusto Carvalho.

Sergipe May Get Another Fertilizer Factory and More Job Openings Will Be Created in the State

The Governor of Sergipe, Belivado Chagas, announced last Wednesday (12/05) a plan to expand fertilizer production in the state. According to him, a consulting company presented a project via videoconference for a fertilizer hub; Sergipe could get a new factory, and more job openings will be generated for the residents of the region.

Petrobras Fails to Sell Termocamaçari Power Plant in Bahia, and Unit Will Be Decommissioned by the State

Professionals in Bahia were not as fortunate as those in Sergipe; the Termocamaçari thermoelectric plant will be decommissioned by Petrobras. The state-owned company was unable to finalize negotiations to lease the plant to Proquigel Química.

The plant runs on natural gas and is located in Bahia. Petrobras had requested from Aneel and obtained in March, the revocation of the license for the 120 MW thermal plant.

Proquigel, controlled by the Unigel Group, leased the nitrogen fertilizer factories from the oil company, located in Bahia and Sergipe.

Petrobras has been seeking solutions for the plant as part of its strategy to focus on natural gas commercialization and optimize its thermal portfolio for self-consumption. Options included selling and commercializing energy.
