Monumental city remained occupied for almost a thousand years, holds giant temples under the forest, and still challenges archaeologists with its mysterious abandonment.

One of the most important cities of the ancient Mayan civilization remains partially hidden within the tropical forest of Guatemala.

Located in the north of the country, Tikal gathers monumental pyramids, thousands of unexcavated constructions, and traces of a population that disappeared during the 9th century.

The archaeological site is part of the Tikal National Park, which covers about 576 square kilometers.

Since 1979, the site has been recognized by UNESCO as a Cultural and Natural World Heritage Site due to its historical and environmental importance.

Tikal was one of the largest cities of the Mayan civilization

Tikal remained occupied for almost a thousand years and reached its peak development between the 3rd and 9th centuries.

During this period, the city became an important political, religious, and economic center of the Classic Maya period.

Its urban area covered approximately 65 square kilometers, while the central core occupied about 16 square kilometers.

Estimates presented by guide Pablo indicate that the metropolitan region could have gathered almost 200,000 inhabitants during its peak.

This number would place Tikal among the largest cities in the world at that time.

Mayan writing revealed rulers and ceremonies

Researchers have managed to decipher much of the ancient Mayan writing preserved on monuments and inscriptions.

This information revealed names of rulers, political conflicts, alliances, and ceremonies performed by the city’s elite.

Many details of the population’s daily life, however, remain unknown.

The balance between knowledge and mystery keeps Tikal among the most fascinating archaeological sites in the Americas.

Abandonment of the city remains without a definitive answer

Tikal began to lose strength during the 9th century and ended up being progressively abandoned.

No isolated cause has been confirmed to explain the city’s collapse.

The main hypotheses include:

  • Wars and political disputes;
  • Epidemics among the inhabitants;
  • Prolonged droughts;
  • Natural disasters;
  • Water scarcity and contamination.

A study published in 2020 by the scientific journal Scientific Reports analyzed sediments found in reservoirs used by the inhabitants.

The researchers identified signs of mercury, phosphate, and cyanobacteria capable of producing toxins.

This contamination may have impaired the supply during drought periods and worsened the crisis faced by the population.

Thousands of structures remain under the forest

A large part of the ancient city has not yet been completely excavated.

According to Pablo, approximately 10,000 structures remain hidden under the tropical vegetation.

Three days would be necessary to observe the main remains already discovered.

A shorter itinerary, however, can be completed in just one day.

Visitors need to bring water, sunscreen, light clothing, and sturdy footwear.

The extent of the park also requires attention, especially outside the trails leading to the central plaza.

Pablo reports that a tourist from Texas disappeared in the jungle two years before his testimony.

No trace of the visitor or his backpack was found.

Giant temples dominate the landscape of Tikal

Temple I, known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar, is approximately 47 meters tall.

Temple II is located directly in front and reaches about 40 meters.

These structures were part of the main religious center of the city.

Temple IV, in turn, is approximately 65 meters tall and represents the tallest construction in Tikal.

The structure was erected in honor of the 27th ruler of the city.

A modern staircase facilitates visitor access to the observation point.

The view reveals the tropical forest and the peaks of other temples above the treetops.

Tikal appeared in one of the biggest movie franchises

The landscape of Tikal also became internationally known for its participation in cinema.

In 1977, the location appeared in Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.

The temples and the forest represented the fictional planet Yavin 4.

The appearance in the film increased the fame of the archaeological site among tourists and fans of the franchise.

Park hosts hundreds of animal species

Tikal also holds great environmental importance.

The park hosts approximately 400 species of birds, 40 species of snakes, and five species of wild cats.

Many of these animals rarely appear before visitors.

The biodiversity reinforces the park’s value and explains its simultaneous recognition as a cultural and natural heritage.

What might still be hidden in Tikal?

The known structures show only a part of the ancient Mayan city.

Thousands of structures remain under the forest and may reveal new details about its population, architecture, and decline.

New excavations may also clarify how Tikal grew, thrived, and was eventually abandoned during the 9th century.

Do you believe that the abandonment of Tikal was mainly caused by droughts and water contamination or by wars and political disputes? Share your opinion!
