This change marks a significant advancement in the transportation market and creates a new competitive landscape between traditional taxis and app drivers.
Passengers can now choose between Uber Taxi or Taxi Promo categories, in addition to the existing conventional options on the platform.
According to Laura Lequain, head of operations for Uber in Brazil, the arrival of the service in the city reinforces the evolution of urban mobility.
“Over the past 10 years in Brazil, Uber has transformed to offer an increasingly broad and convenient experience for users while creating new opportunities for taxi drivers,” she says.
Taxis Gain Ground on Uber and Expand Opportunities for Drivers
With the integration between Uber and Stuo, the approximately 19,000 taxi drivers registered on the platform in Rio de Janeiro now have access to a much larger volume of users.
This could significantly increase demand for rides, benefiting professionals in the sector.
Armindo Mota Junior, CEO of Stuo, emphasizes that the partnership strengthens urban mobility by combining Uber’s global reach with Stuo’s local expertise.
“Our goal is to provide a modern and efficient solution that meets the needs of both passengers and drivers,” he stresses.
The Uber Taxi category already operates in several Brazilian cities such as São Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, and Fortaleza, and is also present in major international centers like New York, Athens, Seoul, Montreal, Sydney, and Madrid.
The expansion of the service to Rio de Janeiro indicates that Uber is increasingly incorporating the taxi segment into its transportation ecosystem.
How to Request a Taxi Through the Uber App?
The process to request a taxi within the Uber app is simple and follows the same flow as conventional rides.
Passengers only need to follow the steps below:
- Open the Uber app and select the “Ride” option.
- Enter the pickup and destination addresses and click “Confirm.”
- Choose between the Uber Taxi or Taxi Promo categories.
- Wait for the taxi driver and start the ride.
In the Uber Taxi category, the fare is calculated by the taximeter and entered manually by the driver at the end of the ride.
In the Taxi Promo, the passenger receives a discount on the traditional taximeter fare, making the ride more economical.
Safety Remains a Priority in the New Mode
Uber has continuously invested in ride safety, and the inclusion of taxis on the platform follows the same protocols adopted for other services.
Passengers have access to detailed information about the vehicle, including model, license plate, name, and photo of the taxi driver, even before the ride starts.
Other features are also available to ensure the safety of users and drivers:
- Real-Time Monitoring: rides can be shared with trusted contacts.
- Background Checks: all drivers undergo a security check before joining the platform.
- Passenger Insurance: all rides are covered by special insurance, ensuring protection for the passenger and any companions.
- Rating System: passengers and drivers can anonymously rate each other, and those with very low ratings or who violate Uber’s guidelines may be removed from the platform.
Impacts on the Market and the Future of Mobility in Brazil
The arrival of Uber Taxi in Rio de Janeiro raises important questions about the future of transportation in the city.
In recent years, taxi drivers have faced significant challenges due to competition from app drivers, leading to a decrease in demand for traditional taxis.
Now, with this new partnership, many professionals in the sector see an opportunity to regain their clientele.
Furthermore, the integration between Uber and taxis could change the pricing dynamics of rides.
On one hand, taxi drivers gain access to more passengers, but on the other hand, they need to compete directly with Uber’s variable fares, which tend to be more dynamic than the fixed model of the taximeter.
This factor could pressure taxi drivers to adopt discounts and promotions to remain competitive within the platform.
How to Register to Work with Uber Taxi?
Taxi drivers interested in joining the new mode can register directly through the Stuo app or the Uber website.
The process includes document verification, proof of taxi license, and final approval to operate on the platform.
The expansion of this service promises to change the transportation market in Brazil, providing more options for passengers and new opportunities for professionals in the sector.
