Ford Develops New Type Of Electric Car That Promises To Revolutionize The Automotive Industry. The Vehicle Does Not Use A Battery And Can Be “Charged” At A Fuel Station.

A Ford announced a car of the future and its main differentiator is that the model will not be powered by any battery, but rather by a hydrogen-powered cell that generates the energy needed to move the vehicle.

Ford Begins Testing Electric Vans

The advantage of this technology of the electric car that can be fueled at a gas station is that there is no massive weight of the batteries. Ford believes in this solution and is testing a fleet of E-Transit vans in England, equipped with fuel cells.

The idea is that long distances with electric cars will only occur with the fuel cell, provided that the roads on which the vehicles travel have hydrogen fueling stations. Many believe that this initiative could be more practical compared to the infrastructure required for batteries.

Ford announced the start of tests with hydrogen cells in the United Kingdom, where 8 electric vans will be used that have been equipped with fuel cells to operate until the end of 2025 without a battery. The aim of the study is to assess the total cost of ownership and operation, infrastructure, and uptime of the electric car required for fueling.

The new hydrogen technology uses energy generated by hydrogen fuel cells instead of a conventional battery, which are combined with oxygen in a tank. This technology could meet the future demands of larger and heavier commercial vehicles that require greater range for daily operation, generating no CO2 emissions.

Ford Will Spend US$ 50 Billion

The system created by Ford for the electric car will function like a battery, extending range and ensuring faster charging than solid batteries connected to the electrical grid. It is worth mentioning that other automotive technology companies, including fleet operators in the United Kingdom, are also participating in the tests.

One of Ford’s strategies in the race for the transition to electric cars and to gain market share is its balance sheet. The company has enough cash, liquidity, and credit to handle the transition and compete with companies like Tesla.

The transition will not be easy and requires mountains of money. By 2026, the automaker will have spent US$ 50 billion on vehicle electrification, which includes funding for new units and vehicle development. The US$ 7 billion announced to install a mega electric vehicle campus in Kentucky and Tennessee is the largest single investment in production by an automaker, according to Ford itself.

Ford’s Balance Sheet In Good Shape

The company is spending all this while supporting its traditional car business and introducing new models to the sector, such as the 2024 Ranger, a mid-size pickup that is already quite present overseas. Before the push for electric cars, the automaker spent about US$ 7 billion to US$ 8 billion annually on factories and equipment. Wall Street sees this number reaching US$ 9 billion annually in the coming years.

This financing will be a challenge, and fortunately, Ford’s balance sheet is currently well away from previous economic cycles. According to John Lawler, CEO, the balance sheet is indeed in good shape and states that the company closed the first quarter with about US$ 29 billion in cash and US$ 46 billion in total liquidity. Moreover, the available cash exceeds the debt incurred by the automaker by about US$ 9 billion.
