Maersk, A Renowned Danish Shipping Company, Has Just Revolutionized The Industry By Receiving The World’s First Methanol-Powered Container Ship.

Born from a collaboration between Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., this pioneering vessel is ready to embark on its maiden voyage to Copenhagen, Denmark, departing from Ulsan, South Korea. This journey will be a unique opportunity for Maersk sailors to experience the operation with the new engines and the use of methanol as fuel.

Adopting bold measures to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, Maersk also plans to receive a fleet of 18 large ocean-going vessels capable of using green methanol starting in 2024. This strategic decision aligns with the company’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral, marking the beginning of a new era in the shipping sector.

The Sustainability Milestone

Maersk, recognizing the importance of becoming a carbon-neutral company, takes a significant step with the introduction of the first methanol-powered container ship. This achievement not only demonstrates the company’s pioneering spirit but also presents a viable solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in this crucial sector of the global economy.

Accompanying the growing global concern about the climate crisis, Maersk seeks to inspire other companies and organizations to follow its example. By investing in more sustainable and environmentally friendly vessels, the company is leading a fundamental change in maritime transport, paving the way for a greener and more conscious future.

The Role of Green Methanol

Green methanol, obtained from renewable sources, is a promising alternative to fossil fuels, as its combustion releases fewer pollutants. By opting for this revolutionary fuel, Maersk is demonstrating its commitment to innovation and environmental preservation.

Furthermore, Maersk secured green methanol for the first voyage of this vessel by collaborating with OCI Global, a Dutch producer and distributor of hydrogen-based products. Thanks to this strategic partnership, the ship will set sail on its maiden journey with certified green biomethanol under the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) system.

Expansion of the Eco-Friendly Fleet

As one of the largest shipping companies in the world, Maersk takes on the responsibility of driving the industry toward environmental sustainability. In line with its decarbonization strategy, the company has ordered six medium-sized container ships from the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group. These vessels, with a capacity of 9,000 TEU, will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on both green methanol and conventional fuel oil.

The investment in building this new fleet is a clear signal of Maersk’s commitment to adopting long-term sustainable practices. With delivery expected between 2026 and 2027, these vessels will not only reduce carbon emissions but also set a higher standard for the industry as a whole.

Maersk is redefining the limits of maritime transport with its bold initiative to adopt green methanol as fuel for its container ships. By investing in an eco-friendly fleet, the company is shaping a more sustainable future where greenhouse gas emissions are minimized, preserving the environment for future generations.

Be part of this transformation and join Maersk on this journey toward a greener and more conscious world. By adopting innovative technologies and forming strategic partnerships, it’s possible to create truly sustainable maritime transport, ensuring a better future for all of us.
