Gerdau Wins The Gold Seal Of The Brazilian GHG Protocol For The Second Consecutive Year. Recognition For Practices In Greenhouse Gas Management In Scopes 1, 2, And 3.
Gerdau, a leader in the steel sector in Brazil, has once again been awarded the Gold Seal Of The Brazilian GHG Protocol. This achievement highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the reduction of pollutant emissions. Obtaining this Seal for two consecutive times underscores Gerdau’s continuous effort to follow strict environmental standards and promote innovation in the steel sector.
This achievement results in an important recognition of the advanced practices of greenhouse gas emission management adopted by the company. Furthermore, the transparency in the emissions inventory carried out by Gerdau strengthens its image as a responsible organization aligned with international sustainability standards. More than a prize, the Gold Seal Of The Brazilian GHG Protocol demonstrates that Gerdau is at the forefront of environmental initiatives in the steel sector.

Highest Level Of Qualification And Transparency In Emission Inventory
Organizations that achieve the Gold Seal Of The Brazilian GHG Protocol reach the highest level of qualification and transparency in the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventory. The result, released on Wednesday (21), corresponds to the 2024 cycle of the program, reflecting both national and international respect and confirming the credibility of the GHG emission data from the company’s scopes 1, 2 And 3.
Voluntary Participation And Public Emission Registry (RPE)
Participation in the program is voluntary, occurring through the Public Emission Registry (RPE). According to Cenira Nunes, General Manager of Environment at Gerdau, ‘the Company is continuously advancing in its journey of learning and implementing greenhouse gas emission management practices, seeking to reduce these gases in its operations. Regaining the Gold Seal Of The Brazilian GHG Protocol confirms our commitment to transparency and demonstrates that we are on the right path to build a more dynamic and sustainable horizon’.
Emission Monitoring And Innovations At The Ouro Branco Unit
A key action for this achievement was the continuous monitoring of emissions at the Ouro Branco unit (MG). This monitoring is now performed online at the thermoelectric plant (CTE) and has also been carried out daily at the coke plant and in the petrochemicals sector, in addition to being implemented in the blast furnaces.
The Ouro Branco unit, which is the largest steel production plant of Gerdau in the world, has an innovative initiative to seek alternatives to reduce the use of mineral coal, utilizing eucalyptus biomass and sawdust as fuel for the blast furnaces.
Positive Impact Of Biocoke And Future Goals
In 2023, this plant achieved 2% biocoke usage, equivalent to approximately 30 thousand tons of biomass. This prevents the emission of over 90 thousand tCO₂e, positively contributing to the management of greenhouse gas emissions and the transparency of the Company’s emission inventories.
Currently, Gerdau has one of the lowest average GHG (CO₂e) emission intensities, with 0.91t CO₂e per ton of steel, a value that is about 50% lower than the global industry average of 1.91 tCO₂e per ton of steel, according to worldsteel. The Company’s goal for 2031 is to reduce emissions to 0.82t CO₂e per ton of steel.
Independent Verification And Classification Of Inventories
Gerdau’s inventory was verified by an independent company and then evaluated by the team of the Brazilian GHG Protocol. The inventories can receive Gold, Silver, and Bronze seals, depending on the completeness and transparency of the reported data.
The monitoring of emissions at the Ouro Branco unit (MG), done online at the thermoelectric plant (CTE), was crucial for obtaining the Gold Seal Of The Brazilian GHG Protocol, demonstrating Gerdau’s commitment to greenhouse gas emission management practices and the continuous pursuit of being a reference in sustainability and innovation in the sector.
