Grupo Supernosso Begins Pilot Project in March 2026 to Replace the 6×1 Shift with the 5×2 Model in Three Units in Minas Gerais and Reignites Debate on Working Hours in Retail.

The debate on working hours in the supermarket sector has taken a new turn with the announcement that the Grupo Supernosso will start, from March 2026, a pilot project to replace the traditional 6×1 shift with the 5×2 model in three units located in Minas Gerais.

The initiative comes at a time when the topic of weekly working hours in Brazilian retail has been publicly discussed, especially regarding the routine of six consecutive days of work with only one day off.

What Changes in Practice: From the 6×1 Shift to the 5×2

Traditionally, the supermarket sector predominantly operates under the 6×1 regime, where the employee works six consecutive days and has one day off. This model is common in retail because it allows continuous operation throughout the week, including weekends.

In the pilot project announced by Grupo Supernosso, the shift will transition to the 5×2 model, meaning:

  • Five consecutive workdays
  • Two days off

The change does not alter the weekly working hours set out in the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT), which remains at 44 hours per week.

To maintain this limit, the daily working hours will be adjusted. In the previous model, many employees operated with around 7 hours and 20 minutes per day. With the new shift, the daily work will be approximately 8 hours and 48 minutes.

Where the Change Will Be Applied

The project will initially be implemented in three units of the chain in Minas Gerais. Grupo Supernosso has a strong presence in the state, being one of the leading regional supermarket chains.

The company stated that the initiative will have an experimental character. If the operational and performance results are deemed satisfactory, the intention is to gradually expand the model to other stores throughout 2026.

Declared Objective of the Company

According to information disclosed by the chain itself, the main motivation for the project is to assess the impact of the 5×2 shift on the routine of employees.

Among the mentioned points are:

  • Reduction of physical strain
  • Improvement in personal life organization
  • Adjustment in weekly travel logistics

The company also intends to measure indicators such as productivity, absenteeism, and internal satisfaction.

The 6×1 Shift in Brazilian Retail

The 6×1 shift is historically adopted in retail because it allows full coverage on the busiest days, especially Saturdays and Sundays.

Supermarkets, by operating even on weekends and holidays, traditionally distribute days off alternately among teams.

However, the model is often the target of labor debates for limiting prolonged periods of rest.

Potential Impact on the Supermarket Sector

If the pilot project proves feasible, the movement could have repercussions in the retail sector, especially among regional chains that operate with similar structures.

Large supermarkets deal with:

  • Continuous shifts
  • Daily logistical operations
  • High customer traffic on weekends

Any structural change in the working hours requires reorganization of teams, schedules, and hiring additional staff, depending on the case.

Adjustment of Hours Without Salary Reduction

It is important to note that the change does not imply a salary reduction, as the weekly working hours remain within the legal limit of 44 hours.

What occurs is a redistribution of hours throughout the week, concentrating the work hours into five days instead of six.

This type of adjustment is permitted by Brazilian labor legislation, as long as the limits of daily and weekly working hours are respected.

Monitoring of Results

The pilot project will be internally monitored by the company. Among the indicators that are typically assessed in changes of this type are:

  • Turnover
  • Absenteeism Rate
  • Productivity by sector
  • Operational Costs

If the model generates the need to expand the workforce to cover hours, this will also be considered in the feasibility analysis.

Grupo Supernosso in the Minas Gerais Market

Grupo Supernosso has been operating for decades in the state of Minas Gerais and has multiple brands and store formats.

With a consolidated regional operation, the company has sufficient structure to test alternative personnel management models in specific units before expanding to the entire chain.

The adoption of the 5×2 model places the company among the first Brazilian supermarket chains to officially test this format in the food retail sector.

National Debate on Working Hours

In recent years, Brazil has witnessed broader discussions on weekly working hours, including proposals for reducing workload and revising traditional models.

Although Grupo Supernosso’s project does not change the total weekly hours, it modifies the distribution, which could influence future collective negotiations in the sector.

The 5×2 model is already widely used in administrative and industrial sectors but is still less common in high-traffic retail.

The announcement that Grupo Supernosso will adopt the 5×2 shift in three units in Minas Gerais starting in March 2026 marks a significant movement in the Brazilian supermarket sector.

Without changing the weekly workload of 44 hours, the company chose to redistribute the hours to five consecutive workdays and two days off, replacing the traditional 6×1 model.

The pilot project will serve as a basis to assess operational feasibility and impact on employees, potentially influencing future decisions within the chain itself and eventually in the regional retail sector.
