The Factory’s Expectation Is to Have 10 Thousand Workers, Compared to the 5 Thousand Currently Employed on Site

The new pulp factory of Suzano in Ribas do Rio Pardo, 100 kilometers from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, invested an amount of R$ 19.3 billion, as it plans to double the number of workers in the first half of 2023. The factory’s expectation is to have 10 thousand workers, compared to the 5 thousand currently employed on site.

Check the Number of Jobs Generated by Suzano

The number of jobs generated is even greater when including workers in eucalyptus planting. The press office reported that Suzano currently maintains 6 thousand jobs in industrial and forestry operations in Três Lagoas and the surrounding area, among its own and third-party workers, with the vast majority of them occupied by residents of the municipalities where the factory operates, according to its policy of valuing local labor.

The pulp factory has been prioritizing the hiring of local workers. However, workers from other municipalities and even from other states are also involved in the project. Some stay overnight in Campo Grande and make the daily round trip of 100 kilometers.

In the operational phase of the pulp factory, the expectation is to generate 3 thousand direct and indirect jobs. The monumental project, which aims to produce 2.55 million tons of eucalyptus pulp per year, is expected to be completed in the second half of 2024.

The president of Suzano, Walter Schalka, states that the new pulp factory represents an important advancement in the company’s long-term strategy. He mentioned that the company is already present in the lives of over 2 billion people through its products, and as a global leader, it is committed to meeting the growing global demand for renewable origin products. Additionally, the pulp factory project will make a significant contribution to generating income and jobs, as well as to carbon capture capacity resulting from the expansion of the forestry base.

Qualification Courses Are Offered by the Company

In addition, Suzano has been offering training courses to train and qualify the workforce. The company reported that it frequently offers training courses to meet the demand in Ribas do Rio Pardo, opening a total of 608 spots in training courses and offering scholarships ranging from R$ 400.00 to R$ 1,500.00. Suzano has already trained 197 people in the industrial area and another 199 in the forestry area, with an additional 138 in training in the coming months.

Suzano emphasized that professional qualification is one of its main concerns and contributions to the development of people and the region where it operates, just as it worked towards this goal when it established its two factories in Três Lagoas.

How Is the Construction Progressing?

Suzano, in its report on the progress of the construction, reported that the works for the new pulp factory have already entered the verticalization phase with the installation of precast concrete pillars. The largest of them so far measures 21 meters in height and weighs 52 tons each, which is equivalent to almost 60 compact cars.

The company explains that one of the large vertical structures that count on precast pillars is the Extraction Machines, which have the function of drying the pulp in the Extraction Machines stage. These machines alone will have 27 pillars of this magnitude, out of a total of 262 pillars.

This pulp factory of Suzano will be the 3rd in MS and will join two others in Três Lagoas, from Eldorado Celulose and Fibria. The Chilean group Arauco is expected to bring a 4th industry to life, which was launched during the administration of André Puccinelli (MDB) and confirmed in the current term of Reinaldo Azambuja (PSDB) in Inocência.
