A new urban electric car arrives in China, and this time, the joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), in which General Motors (GM) holds a 44% stake, has officially launched an electric SUV called Baojun Yep with a very competitive starting price of just 79,800 yuan, equivalent to R$ 57,000 at the current exchange rate.
Small Electric SUV from General Motors Subsidiary Features 715 L Trunk
With leaks at the beginning of this year and an official reveal to the public at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, the Baojun Yep was put on sale in China on May 25, targeting younger buyers with prices lower than the industry average.
The three-door, four-seat square electric SUV is an ultra-compact model measuring just 3,381 mm in length, 1,721 mm in height, and 1,685 mm in width. The Baojun Yep has a wheelbase of 2,110 mm and weighs only 1,006 kg.

It surpassed the Onix Plus and HB20S: with over 5,000 units sold in March, the Caoa Chery Tiggo 5X 2027 has refreshed its look, conquered the market, and will soon launch a version priced at R$ 120,000 for PcD.

The rear seats, where space is limited, can be folded down to provide a generous luggage space of 715 liters. Access to the trunk is through a large rear door that opens on a vertical hinge, with Baojun linking this configuration to a rear door resembling a refrigerator.
However, this is not all the storage space available. Under the front hood, there is a 35-liter trunk that can also serve as a heater or refrigerator, allowing passengers to keep their drinks at the right temperature while camping.
For customers who need more space, the Baojun from General Motors also offers optional retro rooftop racks that can carry up to 30 kg.
New Electric SUV from GM Comes with Various Technologies
The automaker refers to the exterior of the Yep as a Square Box design, while the interior model is called JoyBox.
The dashboard features a dual 10.25-inch display, with one half functioning as a digital instrument panel and the other as the main screen for the infotainment system, which runs an operating system called KiOS, combined with the ADAS system developed by DJI, named LingXi. The latter enables automated parking assistance and lane keeping control (LCC). The mini SUV is also equipped with a 360-degree camera.
Another feature of the electric SUV from General Motors that stands out is a mounting system on the dashboard that allows occupants to secure various items, such as an additional screen in front of the passenger, for example.
The Baojun Yep offers other unique features, the main one being the large external rear display, called Car-watch. Mounted on the rear door and resembling a wristwatch, the screen can be used to communicate texts or images to other drivers or pedestrians.
Vehicle Delivers 67 Horsepower
The mini electric SUV from GM is equipped with a unique powertrain configuration featuring a single motor and rear-wheel drive, consisting of a 28.1 kWh battery and an electric motor delivering 67 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque.
It is worth mentioning that its top speed is limited to 100 km/h. According to the company backed by General Motors, the battery pack supplied by Guangxi Ningfu has a density of 130 Wh/kg and enables a range of up to 303 km, according to the Chinese cycle. In terms of charging, it can go from 30% to 80% in just half an hour.
