General Motors (GM) Announced This Tuesday (7) That It Will Halt Vehicle Production at Its Factory in São José dos Campos (SP) for Three Weeks.
The measure aims at readjusting production, according to a statement released by the metalworkers’ union in the region. According to the union’s vice president, Valmir Mariano, the justification for GM to halt production is due to the decline in vehicle sales in the country, which hit a record low in February, with sales below 130,000 units across all brands.
The São José dos Campos factory is responsible for assembling the Trailblazer and S10 models. The collective vacation is scheduled for the period between March 27 and April 13. It is worth noting that last month, GM had already halted production of its best-selling model, the Onix, in Gravataí (RS). However, in this case, the vacation was already planned for updating and modernizing the lines.
The São José dos Campos factory employs about 3,600 workers and is one of GM’s main units in Brazil. The production halt may have repercussions for the employees and the local economy.

General Motors Started Laying Off Employees at Its Factory in São José dos Campos.
The event, occurring in all sectors of the unit, including motor and transmission production, caused employees to stop production for an hour and a half this Tuesday (27). The union reports that 34 workers have already been dismissed without prior justification.
The layoffs come amid news in the international press that the automaker plans to cut US$ 2 billion in costs worldwide over the next two years. According to the union, there has been no prior negotiation or justification for the layoffs.
In reaction to the layoffs, a strike notice was approved, and a new assembly of metalworkers is scheduled to take place at the start of the second shift, at 2:30 PM. Workers are demanding job security for all employees and the negotiation of alternatives to the layoffs. GM employs about 3,600 workers at the São José dos Campos factory.
The mass dismissal of GM workers reflects the current economic situation in the country, which is suffering from high unemployment rates, mass layoffs, and low economic growth. The situation worries not only the factory workers but the entire local population. The expectation now is that negotiations between the automaker and the union will progress and lead to a solution considering the well-being of the employees and the surrounding community.
