Partnership with Chinese Investors Could Help “Rejuvenate Important Industrial Hubs in the Northeast”
The Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, announced this Saturday (25) on Twitter that the federal government is making deals to resume the factory that used to belong to Ford in Camaçari, Bahia, with Chinese investors. In this way, the government hopes to “rejuvenate important industrial hubs in the Northeast,” as Marinho stated. After the news was released by Veja, it was confirmed by the minister on his social media profile.
Ford ceased vehicle production in Brazil in January 2021. In addition to Camaçari, the American automaker also had factories in Taubaté (SP) and Horizonte (CE). According to Veja, the Chinese intend to use the space for the production of electric cars.
After the Closure of Ford’s Production in Brazil, the Automaker Still Kept Other Factories in South America
After deciding to cease production in Brazil, Ford still kept factories in Argentina and Uruguay in South America. Additionally, the American automaker continued with the Product Development Center in Bahia, the Testing Field in Tatuí (SP), and its regional headquarters in São Paulo, which raises questions about its withdrawal from the country.

Regarding the next steps in the negotiation being conducted to resume the factories closed by Ford, no further details have been provided by the government. Here’s what Luiz Marinho wrote on Twitter:

Job Losses Caused by the Closure of Ford in Brazil Can Be Recovered by the Resumption of the Factories
If the Minister Luiz Marinho’s Positioning Is Analyzed, Between January and November 2021, Vehicle Production Closed 4.8 Thousand Formal Jobs in Bahia – 4.6 Thousand of Which Were in Camaçari, According to Data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged) and IBGE.
No one has forgotten that when Ford ceased its production in the country, over 5,000 layoffs occurred between Brazil and Argentina. However, reactivating a factory in Bahia could boost the sector and open new job opportunities for workers in the region.
For President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the region holds significant importance, as it was one of his main electoral strongholds in the 2022 elections. It is also worth noting that Camaçari is an industrial hub in the Northeast and the fourth most populous city in Bahia. Thus, the resumption of the former Ford factory could be a strategic action taken by the government.
