Air fryers and compact ovens better restore the crispness of pizzas, breads, and breaded foods, while the microwave remains faster for liquids and moist meals. The choice between the appliances depends on the food, the amount prepared, the consumption, and the expected result.

Electric fryers and compact ovens with air circulation have increased their presence in kitchens by offering an alternative for reheating leftovers that lose texture in the microwave, such as pizzas, breads, savory snacks, potatoes, and breaded foods.

In practice, however, the advancement of the air fryer does not represent the automatic end of the microwave, because the equipment uses different methods and delivers specific results depending on the moisture, thickness, and composition of each preparation.

When the priority is to quickly heat beverages, soups, sauces, or moist meals, the microwave maintains an important advantage, while the air circulation device is usually chosen to restore golden, dry, and crispy surfaces.

Air fryer and microwave heat in different ways

According to KitchenAid, the microwave uses electromagnetic waves to quickly heat food, while the air fryer moves hot air around the food to cook and promote a crispier external texture.

For this reason, the microwave usually requires less time to reheat or defrost, while the electric fryer may take a little longer, depending on the food, because the heat needs to circulate around the surface before moving to the interior.

In foods with a lot of water, such as soups, cooked vegetables, sauces, and some ready meals, quick heating remains a relevant advantage, especially when there is no need to create a golden layer or restore crispness.

Even so, pizzas, breaded foods, French fries, and puff pastries generally benefit from air circulation, as the dry heat reduces some of the surface moisture responsible for the softened texture that appears after storage in the refrigerator.

By continuously circulating within a compact chamber, the hot air reaches different parts of the food and promotes browning, but the result depends on the available space, the selected temperature, and how the portion was distributed.

Reheating lasagna requires attention to the center

In the case of lasagna, the layers of pasta, sauce, cheese, and filling have different densities and moisture levels, a condition that can cause the surface to heat before the center, regardless of the equipment chosen for reheating.

Therefore, there is no universal time capable of guaranteeing the same result in all kitchens, as performance changes according to the portion size, initial temperature, appliance power, and the container used.

During the use of an air fryer, a very thick portion may brown or dry out at the edges before receiving enough heat in the center, which requires gradual temperature adjustments and monitoring throughout the process.

Excess food in the basket or tray also deserves attention, because blocking the passage of air reduces circulation efficiency, prolongs heating, and increases the possibility of differences between the outer and inner areas.

Even in the microwave, shallow containers, smaller portions, and pauses to reposition the food can improve heat distribution, especially in dense preparations, where the center takes longer to reach a temperature similar to the edges.

Better texture may require more time

Although the electric fryer usually delivers a crispier surface, this advantage generally comes with a longer cycle, while the microwave is still recommended when the main goal is to reduce the time spent on reheating.

For pizza portions, for example, air circulation can recover some of the firmness of the dough and the browning of the cheese, while microwave waves heat quickly but do not produce the same dry effect on the surface.

As for soups, drinks, sauces, and foods that do not need to be crispy, waiting for the gradual heating of an air fryer may not bring a noticeable benefit, making the microwave a simpler solution for daily routine.

When the food combines moist and crispy parts, the choice becomes less evident, because preserving the filling without softening the surface requires a balance between time, temperature, portion size, and heating method.

Energy consumption varies with the quantity prepared

Although compact appliances are often associated with savings, consumption does not depend only on the power reported by the manufacturer, as the cycle duration, prepared volume, and the need to repeat the process are also part of the calculation.

For small portions, an air fryer may use less than a conventional electric oven, as its reduced chamber requires less energy to heat, as explained by the Energy Saving Trust.

The microwave, on the other hand, tends to maintain low cost per use in quick tasks because it heats the food directly instead of first raising the temperature of the surrounding air, according to the same analysis on household appliances.

When several portions need to pass separately through a small basket, however, the advantage may decrease, as successive cycles accumulate time and consumption, while a larger oven allows for preparing or heating a wider quantity at once.

Two appliances can share space in the kitchen

Even with the growth of electric fryers, the complete replacement of the microwave does not necessarily meet all routines, because speed, capacity, texture, available space, and types of food prepared vary from one home to another.

Soups, milk, coffee, sauces, moist vegetables, and ready meals remain among the most suitable applications for the microwave, while pizzas, breads, roasts, and breaded items usually benefit more from the hot air flow.

Combined models expand this division by bringing together microwave, convection, and functions similar to an air fryer, offering quick heating and the possibility of browning within the same equipment, although performance varies according to each product.

In choosing between keeping, replacing, or combining the appliances, the counter space, frequency of use, portion size, and importance given to speed or recovering the original texture are important factors.

To compare the results more accurately, it is necessary to use equivalent portions, observe the total time, and evaluate the center, edges, and surface, without turning the experience obtained with a certain food into a rule valid for any preparation.
