Government Reacts To The Advance Of Methanol Poisoning With Emergency Measures, Antidote Stock, And Alert To The Population About Health Risks.

Government Reacts To The Advance Of Methanol Poisoning

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, announced on Thursday (2) emergency measures to contain the cases of methanol poisoning recorded in the country. Health Minister Alexandre Padilha stated that the decision was made after a meeting of the Situation Room, established to monitor the progression of the cases.

So far, Brazil has recorded 59 notifications of poisoning, with 11 confirmed cases and one reported death. The health risk to the population worries authorities, who emphasize the need for caution regarding adulterated alcoholic beverages, especially those of unknown origin.

How The Government Will Act In Response To The Emergency

To address the situation, the Government announced immediate actions that include the emergency purchase of medications and the creation of a strategic stock of antidotes in federal university hospitals and SUS services.

According to the Ministry of Health, 4,300 vials of pharmaceutical ethanol, used as an antidote for methanol poisoning, have already been made available. In addition, the Government is also negotiating the international acquisition of fomepizole, a specific medication for this type of poisoning, in discussions with international suppliers and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

According to Padilha, 100 treatments are already secured through immediate donation, with an additional 1,000 units being purchased through PAHO’s Strategic Fund. Thus, the country seeks to rapidly enhance its response to the outbreak.

Epidemiological Situation Worries Authorities

The most recent data from the National Center for Strategic Information in Health Surveillance (CIEVS) shows that the cases are concentrated in São Paulo, which has recorded 53 notifications, with 11 confirmed and 42 under investigation.

Additionally, five cases have been reported in Pernambuco and one in the Federal District. So far, there is one confirmed death and seven deaths under investigation. These numbers raise an alarm and reinforce the need for the Government’s emergency measures to protect the population.

Government Reinforces Recommendations To The Population

Minister Alexandre Padilha was straightforward in pointing out the main precaution: do not consume alcoholic beverages of unknown origin. According to him, colorless liquids with no clear labeling may contain adulterated methanol, a highly toxic and potentially lethal substance.

“It is essential that the population only consumes beverages of proven origin and avoids any suspicious products. The health risk is extremely high and can lead to death”, stated the minister.

Why Methanol Represents A Serious Threat

Methanol is part of the chemical industry and cannot be ingested by humans under any circumstances. When someone consumes beverages adulterated with the substance, it can cause blindness, damage vital organs, and even lead to death.

The danger worsens because methanol appears as a colorless liquid. As a result, many people easily confuse the substance with common spirits, putting the population at even greater risk.

What To Expect From Emergency Measures

The Government has already started distributing antidotes and has made emergency purchases of new medications. However, experts continually emphasize that prevention remains the most effective weapon against methanol poisoning.

Furthermore, federal, state, and municipal agencies need to immediately intensify coordination to monitor each case, quickly expand oversight, and continuously ensure that the population has access to appropriate treatment.

In the meantime, authorities strongly advise Brazilians to be extra cautious about consuming spirits. Thus, any suspicion should lead citizens to immediately seek health services, especially when clear symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, or difficulty breathing arise.
