The Government of Santa Catarina Closes Partnership With General Motors (GM) and Joins Efforts to Encourage the Use of Electric Cars in the State

The Government of Santa Catarina and General Motors (GM) will work together in a task force to encourage and plan the use of electric cars in the state. The proposal is the result of a meeting between the company’s executives and the governor of Santa Catarina, Carlos Moisés, shortly after returning from the Climate Conference in Glasgow. Following GM’s announcement to establish a comprehensive electric car manufacturing policy, the government offered the state’s innovative and technological environment to plan initiatives that involve the transition process, utilizing new vehicle models that contribute to low emissions of polluting gases.

According to the governor, the technological environment has the agility to showcase simultaneous alternatives to the process. While one company launches electric cars, another is already presenting opportunities that may arise in other niches, solutions for the production chain, such as proper disposal and also reuse of components, for example.

This cyclical vision is essential when seeking true sustainability. Carlos Moisés stated that Santa Catarina is interested in promoting projects aimed at protecting the environment and that the state is already acting on multiple fronts for a fair energy transition to cleaner models. Furthermore, current public management indicators ensure legal security for investors.

Santa Catarina Has a Promising Future in the Electric Car Sector

In the case of electric cars, through Celesc, the state has charging stations along a route that goes from the Extreme West to the Coast and continues to work hard to structure the network with more charging points throughout the state.

According to General Motors (GM) Vice President in South America, Marina Willisch, the scenario in Santa Catarina is attractive for agreements that promote the production of electric cars, increasing the state’s, the country’s, and South America’s presence in the mobility sector, which, according to General Motors, is expected to take greater shape in the coming years.

According to the GM executive, from the company’s macro perspective, these are already considered powerful markets. Santa Catarina, especially, due to having an excellent base of suppliers and the commitments made to low emission and sustainability goals. Marina stated that the General Motors plant located in Joinville is one of the most sustainable in the company.

According to Marina Willisch, what the company heard from the government was fantastic and makes them believe it is possible. This is something that is still new in Brazil, but with the partnerships and support that are beginning with the state, good public policies will help both the State government and the company develop a mobility model that can be safe, more accessible, and free of polluting gases.

The meeting, held via a web conference, included the participation of the Executive Secretary for International Affairs, Fernando Raupp, the Secretary of the Environment, Leonardo Porto Ferreira, and from GM, Glaucia Roveri, President of Celesc, Cleicio Poleto, Manager of Government Relations, Daniela Kraemer, Director of Public and Government Relations, and Adriano Barros.
