Cooking Gas Price Hike Harms Families in Extreme Poverty
Cooking gas prices have experienced several increases since 2019, due to the change in Petrobras’ pricing policy. Last week, the product reached R$ 130 in some municipalities in the Central-West region, an area considered hard to access, according to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).
According to the Government of São Paulo, the gas voucher is one of the most important programs ever launched, as it promises to positively change and impact the lives of many families in the state. According to Doria, those with low income understand the difficulty of having a gas cylinder.
In addition to São Paulo, the governments of Maranhão and Ceará have already started distributing gas vouchers to families since June. This month, Espírito Santo and Curitiba are also considering implementing the assistance.
Bolsa do Povo
The Gas Voucher is one of the programs that compose Bolsa do Povo, one of the largest social protection programs ever developed by the government of São Paulo. The project was created in May of this year and is expected to invest R$ 1 billion in resources by December.
In Bolsa do Povo, alongside the gas voucher, programs such as Bolsa Trabalho, Renda Cidadã, Via Rápida, Jovem, Ação, emergency housing assistance, and Bolsa Talento Esportivo have been launched.
