Federal Government President Jair Bolsonaro States That If ICMS Is Eliminated, Kitchen Gas Could Be Cut To Half Price And Challenges State Governors To Eliminate The Tax
In light of the rising price of kitchen gas, President Jair Bolsonaro reiterated on Monday (23) the plan to sell gas canisters directly at distributors. The proposal was raised by the Federal Government last week and faced criticism for potentially encouraging illegal trade. Bolsonaro also challenged governors to eliminate the ICMS charge on kitchen gas.

Bolsonaro’s Words On The ICMS Of Kitchen Gas
Bolsonaro states that he would like one of the governors to do what he did, which was to eliminate the ICMS, one of the biggest contributors to the price increase of kitchen gas. If any of the governors eliminate the ICMS, Bolsonaro claims he will allow direct sales of the gas canister, just as presented in a provisional measure for ethanol.

According to the Federal Government, direct sales of kitchen gas, if governors remove the ICMS, could lower the price of the canister by half, and there could also be savings in transportation costs and profit margins for resellers.
Bolsonaro states that after eliminating the charge, consumers could comfortably buy a gas canister for R$ 55 or 60. According to him, it’s possible, but it’s unlikely to find a governor willing to eliminate the ICMS on kitchen gas.
The president asserts that it is not the gas voucher that the people want. If he had to create a gas voucher, Bolsonaro claims he would, but these programs are expensive, and eliminating the charge would be much cheaper.
Federal Government Talks About Gasoline
Bolsonaro also reiterated that he is not responsible for the increase in fuel prices. In a speech during a housing delivery event in Manaus, last Wednesday (18), he also provoked the governors.
According to the Federal Government, a liter of gasoline is sold for less than R$ 2 at the refinery and reaches gas stations at R$ 6 or R$ 7 a liter, which is absurd, and the federal tax is around R$ 0.70; thus, the president claims that the “villain of the story” is not the federal government. Bolsonaro also stated that to think of those who need it most is to eliminate taxes, not increase them.
President Aims To Eliminate ICMS On Fuels Again
At the beginning of this month, making another gesture to truck drivers, the Federal Government announced its intention to eliminate the ICMS on diesel starting next year. According to the president, the government is exploring the possibility for a tax reduction, but cannot work with promises.
Bolsonaro claims to know that fuel prices are high and it is necessary to find solutions to reduce them as much as possible. The federal government reduced the ICMS to make fuel prices affordable, but state governors increased the tax, causing prices to remain the same.
