Attempt To Evade Military Service By Gaining Weight Deliberately Landed A Man In Prison, Raising Debates About Frauds And Responsibilities In Mandatory Service.
A 26-year-old South Korean man was sentenced to one year in prison after attempting to circumvent mandatory military service in an unusual way: he deliberately gained weight to be deemed unfit. The strategy, however, did not work and ended up with an unexpected outcome.
In South Korea, all healthy men aged between 18 and 35 are required to serve in the military for at least 21 months. The only legal way to escape is to present health issues that prevent service in the armed forces. Aware of this, the young man devised a bold plan: for months, he began consuming excessive amounts of food, rapidly gaining weight.
The idea was simple. With a high body mass index (BMI), he hoped to be classified as unfit for service. However, military authorities identified inconsistencies in his sudden weight change and launched an investigation.

Investigation Revealed Fraudulent Plan
To be considered unfit, he doubled his food intake and drank large amounts of water before the physical examination. He followed a diet plan prepared by a friend, who was also judged as an accomplice.
The documents presented to the Seoul Eastern Dongbu District Court revealed that he constantly monitored his weight and adjusted his diet as needed.
Initially, in October 2017, he was classified with grade 2 in the physical examination, which indicated that he was fit for military service. However, in June 2023, his weight reached 102.3 kilograms, with a body mass index (BMI) of 35.8.
With this change, he received grade 4, making him ineligible for traditional military service. This allowed him to serve in an administrative role within a government agency, without needing to relocate to a military base.
Everyone Became Suspicious
Authorities, however, became suspicious of the rapid weight change. An investigation was opened and revealed that he had intentionally altered his weight to avoid recruitment.
Once the act was proven, he was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years. His friend, accused of aiding the scheme, received six months in prison, also suspended for two years. During the trial, the accomplice denied criminal intent and stated that he never believed his friend would go through with the plan.
The attempt to evade military service without justification can result in a sentence of up to three years in prison in South Korea. However, the court opted for a lighter sentence, considering that the defendants had no criminal records, confessed to the crime, and committed to fulfilling their military obligations.
This is not the first time individuals have been prosecuted for recruitment fraud. The South Korean government closely monitors suspicious cases and investigates any irregularities in physical examinations. Legislation seeks to ensure that all citizens fulfill their obligations, maintaining fairness in mandatory military service.
The young man faced a probationary period but will remain under supervision. If he commits any infractions during this time, he may be required to serve the prison sentence. Meanwhile, authorities are intensifying surveillance on attempts to evade military service through fraudulent means.
