Honda Prelude Sparks Controversy With Explosive Prices in the USA and Raises Questions About Its Future Value in the Brazilian Market

The long-awaited return of the Honda Prelude to the international market has stirred fans, experts, and everyone who followed its reappearance at the Auto Show. The initial reception was extremely positive, especially because the hybrid coupe marks the return of a classic name to the catalogs of the Japanese brand. However, as time passed, a new controversy took shape. The information was reported by Carscoops, which showed how the model, recently launched in the United States, is being subjected to heavy markups and values that border on the absurd.

Shortly after sales began, Honda set the suggested price at 42 thousand dollars — approximately R$ 226 thousand in direct conversion. This amount, although high, still seemed reasonable for a hybrid sports coupe. However, reports quickly emerged of dealerships charging far above the recommended price, turning the Prelude into the centerpiece of a national discussion about market practices and automotive speculation.

Markup Exceeds Any Logic and Turns the Prelude Into an Improvised Rival of BMW and Supra

In the United States, unlike the Brazilian market, the suggested price is merely a recommendation, while each dealership has complete freedom to set whatever price they wish. Therefore, many opted to add what is called a market adjustment, which in practice is just the traditional markup charged when demand exceeds supply.

With limited stock and high public curiosity about the relaunch, some dealerships began to exploit the situation. As reported by Carscoops, cases of abuse quickly went viral on social media. One customer reported paying 59,345 dollars, even knowing that the MSRP was 42 thousand. According to him, the dealership added a protection package and a market adjustment that together exceeded 15 thousand dollars, including simple items like film, wheel locks, and trunk protectors.

Just a few days later, another listing displayed the Prelude for 61,714 dollars, including markup and extra fees. But the most extreme case came from a dealership in California, which asked for 63,850 dollars, almost R$ 343 thousand, claiming that this unit was “1 of 60 in the state.” Such prices bring the hybrid coupe closer to models like Ford Mustang Dark Horse, Toyota GR Supra, and even BMW M2, creating a comparison completely outside the original proposal of the car.

It is worth noting that, when selecting all available options on Honda’s official website, the maximum price the Prelude can reach is 50,926 dollars — approximately R$ 274 thousand. Therefore, the abusive prices charged by dealerships exceed any plausible justification, especially for a car that is still in its first months of availability.

Expectation, Speculation, and an Inevitable Question: How Much Will the Prelude Cost in Brazil?

The big question that arises, especially among Brazilians following the international automotive market, is why consumers in the USA don’t simply look for another dealership. And the answer is simple: they wait. Launches always begin with speculation, markups, and reduced stocks. After a few months, more units arrive, interest diminishes, the frenzy passes, and the market tends to stabilize. Cars that today appear for 60 thousand dollars can easily show up for 44 or 45 thousand when the dust settles.

Despite all the controversies, a new curiosity grows in Brazil. As the Prelude is confirmed to arrive in the country in the second half of 2026, the question remains: if a hybrid coupe priced at 42 thousand dollars already exceeds 60 thousand in the USA, could the model approach the prices of BMW, Mercedes, or Toyota GR in Brazil?
This answer nobody has — neither I, nor you, Jefferson — and precisely because of this, the topic sparks even more interest.

And you? Would you pay more than 60 thousand dollars for a hybrid Honda Prelude or would you wait for the market to calm down? Comment and join the discussion!
