Pioneering Project Takes the Cultivation of Spices, Herbs, and Vegetables to Offshore Vessels, Providing Nutrition and Comfort Even Miles Away from Land
Sodexo, a global leader in food service and facilities, took an innovative step in 2024 by launching the cultivation of spices, fresh herbs, and vegetables aboard vessels at sea. The project is part of the concept of Offshore Living, which transforms the experience of those working on platforms and ships.
According to the Offshore Operations Director, Renata Sebben, the proposal aims to combine hospitality and fresh nutrition. “Our commitment is to care for people by providing onboard cultivated meals that are tasty and free from pesticides,” she emphasized.
The hydroponic gardens installed onboard allow for efficient production in limited spaces, using nutrient solutions that reach directly to the roots of the plants. In this way, the food is harvested in the vessels’ own restaurants, reinforcing a unique dining experience.

Fresh Food in Extreme Conditions
Working weeks away from home is a reality marked by physical and emotional challenges. However, Sodexo found a way to provide comfort onboard: hydroponic gardens that ensure nutritious vegetables and fresh herbs every day.
This production model enhances the feeling of welcome. After all, for the workers onboard, tasty and fresh meals represent more than just nutrition: they mean well-being, motivation, and care amid the challenging ocean environment.
The Offshore Living Concept in Detail
Created in 2023 and expanded in 2024, Offshore Living is based on four pillars that structure maritime hospitality:
- Safe: constant reinforcement of safety onboard.
- Savour: healthy, fresh, and tasty food.
- Comfort: services that promote physical and emotional comfort.
- Plus: comprehensive support for offshore life.
These pillars work together to ensure a more human and differentiated experience. Hydroponic cultivation fits within the Savour pillar but also strengthens all the others, as it directly impacts collective well-being.

Social Impact and Quality of Life at Sea
In 2024, Sodexo solidified the idea that hospitality also belongs at sea. The inclusion of hydroponic gardens brought immediate benefits: fresh, varied meals free of pesticides became part of the daily routine.
This care nourishes not only the body but also the crew’s morale. For many workers, the taste of fresh herbs makes all the difference during long stays away from home, reinforcing their connection to life on land.
The Future of Offshore Hospitality
Sodexo’s initiative positions Brazil prominently in the international maritime hospitality landscape. The use of hydroponic gardens on vessels is still a rare resource in the sector, but it is emerging as a benchmark for innovation and sustainability.
Looking ahead, facilities sector experts believe the model can be expanded. After all, the production of fresh food in hostile environments is not just a competitive advantage: it is a structural transformation that redefines the standards of offshore life.
The question that arises now is clear: do you believe this innovation should be expanded to all vessels in the sector, becoming the norm in the future of maritime hospitality?
