Check Out the Most Common Names and Surnames in the Country According to the Updated Data from the 2022 Demographic Census by IBGE
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released on November 4, 2025 the new edition of its survey on the most common names and surnames in the country, based on the 2022 Demographic Census.
The main novelty of this update is the inclusion of detailed information about surnames, which revealed that “Silva” is overwhelmingly dominant, appearing in 16.76% of the Brazilian population.
Thus, more than 34 million people share the same surname. At the same time, the names Maria and José remain firmly at the top of the most registered, maintaining the tradition observed since 2010.
Hegemony of Given Names
According to IBGE, the name Maria continues to be the most popular among women, totaling 12,224,470 records.
Furthermore, José leads among men, with 5,141,822 occurrences.
On the other hand, Ana and Francisca rank among the most common female names, while João and Antônio continue to be among the most common male names.
Therefore, even with the increase in the variety of names — which already exceeds 140,000 different variations — tradition remains alive and reinforces the cultural and religious heritage of the country.

Moreover, the permanence of Maria and José reinforces the strong influence of Christian and Portuguese tradition, while the predominance of Silva demonstrates the miscegenation and family continuity that spans generations.
In this way, the study allows for an understanding of how Brazilian culture transforms while maintaining its roots.
