Growth of free distance learning courses due to the pandemic

The beginning of the pandemic, in 2020, accelerated the remote learning process. Remote education, at first at higher and postgraduate level, had already shown a great advance in growth in Brazil. Social distancing has only given a small boost to the development of support platforms for distance learning across the country.

Between August and October 2020 alone, there was a 39% increase in enrollments for distance undergraduate courses, according to a survey structured by the unicesumar, the fourth largest university in Brazil.

Pandemic increases the use of online technology in schools and creates “a probability” of improvements

When the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a statewide lockdown more than a year ago, schools and educators scrambled to transition to online e-learning.

Outside the classroom, learning losses can translate into even greater long-term challenges. It has long been known that reductions in test scores are associated with future declines in the Brazilian labor market. On the other hand, increases in student achievement lead to significant increases in future income, as do additional years of schooling, which are associated with an 8–9 percent gain in lifetime earnings.

The absence of any intervention and learning losses stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to have a long-term compounding negative effect on the future well-being of many children. These learning losses can translate into less access to higher education, lower labor market participation and lower future earnings. The proportion of children educated at home has also increased.
