Growth of Free EAD Courses Due to the Pandemic
The beginning of the pandemic in 2020 accelerated the remote learning process. Remote education, initially at the higher education and postgraduate levels, had already shown significant growth in Brazil. Social distancing only gave a small boost to the development of support platforms for EAD across the country.
Between August and October 2020 alone, there was a 39% increase in enrollments for distance degree courses, according to a survey conducted by Unicesumar, the fourth-largest university in Brazil.
Pandemic Increases the Use of Online Technology in Schools and Creates “A Probability” of Improvements
When the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a lockdown across the state about a year ago, schools and educators struggled to make the transition to online EAD learning.
Outside the classroom, learning losses can translate into even greater long-term challenges. It has long been known that reductions in test scores are associated with future declines in the Brazilian job market. On the other hand, increases in student achievement lead to significant rises in future income, just as additional years of schooling are associated with an 8–9 percent gain in lifetime earnings.
The absence of any intervention and the learning losses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to have a compounded negative effect on the future well-being of many children. These learning losses may translate into less access to higher education, lower labor market participation, and lower future earnings. The proportion of children educated at home has also increased.
