The Operation of IPVA Is the Competence of Each State. However, the Great Majority of Them Grant Tax Exemption After a Certain Manufacturing Time of the Vehicle, Which Can Vary from 10 to 20 Years.

The second half of 2022 has begun, and many people are already thinking about the taxes they need to pay next year, such as the Motor Vehicle Property Tax (IPVA).

However, to the delight of many Brazilians, since currently, due to the amount of money invested, owning a vehicle in Brazil is considered a luxury, many drivers will not have to pay IPVA in 2023. After a certain manufacturing time, there are rules in several Brazilian states that end the payment of the tax.

How to Get IPVA Exemption 2023?

Since IPVA is the competence of each state, each federative unit determines how the benefit works. Therefore, it is not possible to apply a unified rule in all cases.

The vast majority of states grant exemption after a certain manufacturing time of the vehicle, which can vary from 10 to 20 years. Below, see how this works in each federative unit:

For the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio Grande do Sul, the IPVA exemption occurs after 20 years of the vehicle’s manufacture. For the state of Mato Grosso, the IPVA exemption occurs after 18 years, while for the states of Tocantins, Sergipe, Amapá, Rondônia, Maranhão, Amazonas, Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso do Sul, Ceará, Bahia, Piauí, Goiás, Espírito Santo, and the Federal District, the exemption occurs after 15 years. Finally, in Rio Grande do Norte, Roraima, and Acre, the exemption is valid after 10 years of the vehicle’s manufacture.

The vehicles that stop paying taxes in some states are: Audi A3 2013; Toyota Hilux 2002; Toyota Corolla SE-G 2003; Volkswagen Beetle 1985; Volkswagen Fox 2003; Volkswagen Gol 2008; Volkswagen Saveiro 2013; Citroen C3 2003; Citroën C4 Pallas 2012; Chevrolet Montana 2003; Chevrolet Astra 2010; Chevrolet Cobalt LTZ 2012; Chevrolet Prisma 2013; Jeep Wrangler 2002; Dodge Dart 1970; BMW Z4 2007; Honda Fit 2008; Ford EcoSport 2003; Ford Ka 2008; Ford Focus 2008; Ford Fiesta 2013; Hyundai HB20S 2013; Fiat Doblò Adventure 2003; Fiat Palio Weekend 2008; GM Celta.

The exemption from paying IPVA is also valid, depending on the state, for certain types of serious illnesses, such as amputation; arthrodesis; arthritis; arthrogryposis; post-surgical prostate cancer; heart diseases; spinal, knee, wrist surgeries, and/or shoulder injuries; patellar chondromalacia; intellectual disability; visual impairment; Parkinson’s disease; limb shortening; multiple sclerosis; scoliosis; ankylosing spondylitis; stomas; herniated disc; renal failure; repetitive strain injuries (RSI); malformation; mastectomy; dwarfism, among others.

How Do I Access IPVA 2023?

The collection of IPVA 2023 is done by the State Department of Finance (Sefaz), and not by the State Department of Transit (Detran), as many believe. Even though Sefaz is responsible for organizing calendars and receiving and releasing discounts, Detran oversees the payments, given that IPVA 2023 is linked to annual licensing, which is the responsibility of Detran. People who do not pay IPVA cannot license their vehicle and issue the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Certificate (CRLV 2023).

By accessing the State Department of Finance website or the application created for IPVA 2023, the citizen will know how much they owe in IPVA and will be able to issue the tax payment guide.

The inquiry works through the following steps: access the Sefaz website, click on the “IPVA” icon, select “Consult debts,” fill in with your login and password created on the portal, inform the vehicle’s license plate and the Renavam number, and the system will provide the boleto.

The IPVA 2023 calendar will be made available on the State Department of Finance website of your state.
