USP Course Covers Transliteration of Chinese and Armenian
The Faculty of Philosophy, Languages, and Human Sciences at USP (FFLCH-USP) has opened registrations for the Course on Transliteration of Eastern Languages: The Case of Armenian and Chinese.
With a duration of five hours and conducted remotely, the program aims to teach fundamental concepts of transliteration and its applications in the global linguistic context.
Participants will have access to PDF teaching materials and will follow the classes via Google Meet, making the experience accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
According to USP, the course aims to explore the relationship between phonemes and graphemes, addressing historical and methodological aspects of the romanization of these languages.
What Will Be Taught in the Course?
The course syllabus is divided into four main areas:
- Fundamental Concepts: Introduction to transliteration, romanization, phonemes, graphemes, spelling rules, and etymology.
- Armenian Language: Differences between Classical and Modern Armenian, Eastern and Western variants, as well as transliteration methods such as ALA-LC (American Library Association + Library of Congress) and Húbschmann-Meillet.
- Chinese Language: Overview of Chinese languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese, with emphasis on the regulation of pinyin.
- Practical Applications and Conclusions: Importance of transliteration in a global context and its academic and professional applications.
