Want to Learn More About Chinese and Armenian? USP Offers a Free Online Course on Transliteration of These Rare Languages! There Are Only 80 Spots Available and Selection Is by Lottery.

Learning a new language can open doors to different academic and professional opportunities.

When it comes to languages like Chinese and Armenian, understanding transliteration is essential for interpreting phonemes, spellings, and cultural contexts.

With this in mind, the University of São Paulo (USP), regarded as the best educational institution in Brazil, is offering a free online course for those who wish to delve deeper into the topic.

USP Course Covers Transliteration of Chinese and Armenian

The Faculty of Philosophy, Languages, and Human Sciences at USP (FFLCH-USP) has opened registrations for the Course on Transliteration of Eastern Languages: The Case of Armenian and Chinese.

With a duration of five hours and conducted remotely, the program aims to teach fundamental concepts of transliteration and its applications in the global linguistic context.

Participants will have access to PDF teaching materials and will follow the classes via Google Meet, making the experience accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

According to USP, the course aims to explore the relationship between phonemes and graphemes, addressing historical and methodological aspects of the romanization of these languages.

What Will Be Taught in the Course?

The course syllabus is divided into four main areas:

  • Fundamental Concepts: Introduction to transliteration, romanization, phonemes, graphemes, spelling rules, and etymology.
  • Armenian Language: Differences between Classical and Modern Armenian, Eastern and Western variants, as well as transliteration methods such as ALA-LC (American Library Association + Library of Congress) and Húbschmann-Meillet.
  • Chinese Language: Overview of Chinese languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese, with emphasis on the regulation of pinyin.
  • Practical Applications and Conclusions: Importance of transliteration in a global context and its academic and professional applications.

Who Can Enroll?

According to USP, the course does not require prior education in the field and is open to all interested individuals. Students, teachers, researchers, and even language enthusiasts can participate, making it an excellent opportunity to expand linguistic and cultural knowledge.

In total, 80 spots are available, and participant selection will be done by electronic lottery through USP’s system.

According to the university, the course represents a unique opportunity for those who wish to better understand the structure of Eastern languages and their practical applications.

In addition to adding value to the academic and professional curriculum, knowledge of transliteration can facilitate research and translations in the field of linguistics.

Furthermore, according to USP, transliteration is an essential process for those who wish to correctly interpret different writing systems, especially those that do not use the Latin alphabet.

Understanding how phonemes transform into graphemes and the logic behind this process allows for not only better pronunciation and oral comprehension but also facilitates the study of distinct cultures.

Beyond the academic impact, transliteration is also of great importance in official translations, international documents, and scientific research.

Throughout the classes, participants will have the opportunity to understand not only the technical rules involved but also the historical and cultural variations that influence this process.

How to Enroll?

Registrations can be made for free between February 10 and 13, 2025, through USP’s APOLO platform. To enroll, simply access the link: https://uspdigital.usp.br/apolo/inscricaoPublicaFormTurmaListar?codund=8&codcurceu=80402731&codedicurceu=25001&numseqofeedi=1&oriins=W
