The Judicial Decision That Ends The Plagiarism Case Strengthens Mariah Carey’s Position, Imposes Significant Financial Sanctions on the Accusers, and Sends a Clear Signal About Legal Limits in the Dispute Over Musical Copyright
Singer Mariah Carey achieved another victory in the United States justice system by definitively closing the plagiarism case involving her Christmas classic, ensuring the case’s dismissal and the sentencing of the plaintiffs to pay US$ 92.3 million, a relevant decision for the music industry.
Accusation and Damages Claim
The lawsuit was filed by country singer Andy Stone, known as Vince Vance, and songwriter Troy Powers, who claimed unauthorized copying of a song of the same name released in the late 1980s.
According to the plaintiffs, the song All I Want for Christmas Is You, released in 1994, would reproduce essential elements of the work performed by the band Vince Vance & The Valiants, prompting a damages claim of US$ 20 million.

The case was analyzed by the U.S. justice system, which evaluated documents, allegations, and arguments presented by the parties, finding the evidence of copyright infringement claimed by the accusers to be insufficient.
In March, the presiding judge ordered the case to be closed, classifying the lawsuit as unfounded and pointing out a serious set of irregularities in the procedural conduct adopted by the plaintiffs.
Judicial Decision and Financial Sanctions
In addition to the definitive dismissal, the ruling required Stone and Powers to pay US$ 92.3 million in attorney’s fees to Mariah Carey’s defense team.
The judge also imposed additional sanctions on other defendants included in the lawsuit, such as Sony Music, Kobalt Publishing, and producer Walter Afanasieff.
These payments total about US$ 109.9 thousand and were justified by the need to cover costs considered unnecessary, generated by claims classified as weak and lacking factual support.
According to the ruling, the defendants were forced to respond to demands that did not present sufficient legal grounds, unduly extending the duration and costs of the litigation.
Conduct of the Lawyers Under Plagiarism Analysis
The court also identified ethical failures in the actions of lawyers Gerard Fox and Douglas M. Schmidt, legal representatives of Stone and Powers during the process.
Among the highlighted issues was the omission of Troy Powers’ name in filed documents, considered a significant irregularity by the presiding judge.
The lawyers have until January 5 to justify their conduct, at risk of additional disciplinary sanctions in case of failure to provide an adequate response.
Relevance of the Work and Recent Context
Released on the album Merry Christmas, the song has become one of the biggest hits of singer Mariah Carey’s career, with a recurring presence on the music charts during the Christmas season.
The judicial victory comes at a time of prominence for the artist, who recently reached 100 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, considering all singles that led the ranking throughout her career.
The closure of the case reinforces the legal protection of established works and ends a litigation that extended over years, without a recognition of copyright infringement.
