Petrobras Launches Tender for a Floating Production Platform; Innovative Technologies Promise Emissions Reduction.
Petrobras announced on Friday (4) the launch of a tender for the chartering of a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) for the Barracuda and Caratinga fields, located in the Campos Basin. This tender comes shortly after President Lula supported oil exploration in the Amazon River Mouth.
This new floating production platform will have the capacity to produce 100,000 barrels of oil per day and process 6 million m³ of natural gas, highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to expanding energy production in Brazil.
The announcement was made through the Petronect portal, and the project includes innovative technologies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Among the features are the closed flare system (FGRS), equipment with reduced fugitive emissions, and the possibility of implementing combined cycle co-generation and all-electric concepts.

Details of the Barracuda and Caratinga Fields
Barracuda Field
Discovered by Petrobras in 1990 and starting production in 1997, the Barracuda field is located in the central-southern part of the Campos Basin, approximately 88 km southeast of Cabo de São Tomé. The water depth varies from 600 to 1100 meters.
Barracuda produces through the FPSO P-43, also using part of the capacity of the FPSO P-48 from Caratinga. Oil production is transferred to shuttle tankers on average every 7 days. The field’s production includes 18,002 barrels/day of oil and 3.5 thousand m³/day of natural gas, according to ANP data from June.
Caratinga Field
The Caratinga field operates through the FPSO P-48, anchored at a water depth of about 1,040 meters. The unit has the capacity to process 150,000 bpd of oil and 6 million m³/day of gas. According to ANP, production was 38.5 thousand barrels of oil and 755 m³/day of natural gas in June.
Revitalization and Future Investments in the Campos Basin
The tender represents a step in the ambitious revitalization plan for the mature fields of the Campos Basin, recognized as the largest of its kind in the world. Petrobras plans to invest US$ 18 billion in the project in the coming years.
In addition to the Barracuda and Caratinga fields, the initiative includes the Marlim and Voador fields, which will feature the FPSOs Anita Garibaldi and Anna Nery. Together, these projects will have the capacity to produce up to 150 thousand barrels per day.
To implement these new production projects, Petrobras is preparing to drill 14 new wells and relocate another 61, signaling a promising future for the Brazilian oil industry and reaffirming the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
