A Bank Failure Transformed a Mother’s Negative Balance Into Billions of Reais and Revealed a Rare Story of Honesty, Protagonized by a Simple Woman Who Preferred a Peaceful Conscience to an Instant Fortune.
There are stories that seem to come straight out of a movie script: an ordinary person, facing financial difficulties, suddenly sees their bank account filled with billion reais.
What would be a dream for many turned into a curious episode — and a lesson in honesty — in the life of a mother from Goiás.
The protagonist of this story did not buy cars, did not travel abroad, nor withdrew a single cent.

Young people are leaving college in the United States and competing for jobs in construction with salaries of R$ 500,000 per year.
She preferred to act with integrity and seek the bank.
The incident occurred in Anápolis, a city about 55 kilometers from Goiânia, and gained national attention due to the reaction of the customer, Leizimar Silva Triers, 35 years old.
A mother of four girls — including one-year-old triplets — and unemployed, she lives with her husband and daughters on a modest income of about R$ 1,500 per month.
Even so, she had no doubt when she saw a billion-dollar balance on the app screen.
The Morning When the Balance Turned Into A Billion

Leizimar told that the surprise came when she opened the Caixa Econômica Federal app on a Saturday in April.
The account, which had R$ 470 negative, suddenly showed R$ 2.28 billion available.
“I was really surprised. The transaction was made on the 11th, but I noticed it on the 13th, which was Saturday, and so I waited until Monday to contact the manager,” she recalled.
When she went to the agency, the employee informed her that the amount did not actually exist and that the transaction was the result of a system error.
The manager also explained that, if the money had been used, the customer could be held accountable.
“I didn’t even need her alert. I would never use money that wasn’t mine,” Leizimar said.
The episode took place in 2019 and became one of the most talked-about events during that time on social media.
At the same time, a businessman in Goiânia was investigated for trying to spend R$ 18 million mistakenly deposited, a situation that ended at the police station.
The Position of Caixa
In a statement released to the press, Caixa Econômica Federal confirmed the failure.
“On April 12 there was a system inconsistency that affected the balance statement of some customers that weekend.”
The bank emphasized that the irregularity was limited to the visualization of the amount, with no possibility of withdrawal or transfer.
The institution also informed that, if any loss was detected, the customer would be reimbursed after investigation.
The episode led Caixa to guide account holders to seek their agencies whenever they identify discrepancies in statements or balances.
A Choice Amidst Difficulty

Leizimar’s decision to report the error quickly drew attention not only because of the amount involved but also due to the family’s financial situation.
She lives with her husband, Mailton, and their four daughters in a simple house in Vila Formosa, a residential neighborhood in Anápolis.
The couple is still paying off the mortgage for their home and a car, while trying to balance expenses with diapers, food, and medications for the triplets.
“Even though we are going through some difficulty, we prefer our peaceful conscience,” she said.
After the error was corrected, the account balance returned to negative.
Still, she states that the episode reinforced values she wants to pass on to her daughters.
“You never lose when you are honest. I will be able to tell my daughters that their mother received a large sum and returned it.”
The Backstage of a Billion-Dollar Error
Cases of unintended deposits or banking system failures, although rare, happen with some regularity.
According to experts, synchronization problems between internal systems, automatic updates, and cache failures can cause the display of unreal values for brief periods.
In these situations, the bank is able to quickly trace the error and prevent any withdrawal.
At the time, Caixa explained that the technical problem was resolved that same weekend and that the systems were stabilized shortly after.
The institution’s guidance, as in Leizimar’s case, is clear: the customer should register the service and wait for automatic correction — never move the amount.
Values That Money Cannot Buy
Despite the repercussions, Leizimar and her husband continue to lead a simple life.
With a tight budget, the couple dreams of expanding their house to build a separate room for the girls.
“Today they still sleep with us,” she said.
She says she prefers to see the episode as a curious reminder and an example that honesty is still possible, even in times of great difficulty.
“I think God tested me that day. It was a scare, but also a lesson. The greatest prize I have is my daughters. They are my true treasures,” she stated.
A Case That Became An Example
The episode from Anápolis continues to be remembered for provoking a type of reflection that goes beyond numbers.
On one side, a banking error that exposed a technological flaw. On the other, a woman who, despite facing financial difficulties, chose to act with integrity.
Leizimar’s story shows that sometimes true wealth is not in the bank balance, but in a peaceful conscience.
What would you do if you saw billions appear out of nowhere in your bank account?
