The Company Announced A New CEO Who Promises To Fulfill Digitalization And Decarbonization Roadmaps With Goals By 2040
Maersk, a global leader in transportation services, announced a new CEO. Swiss Vincent Clerc takes on the company’s top position with the promise of continuing efforts in digitalization and decarbonization, maintaining operational excellence and, of course, seizing business opportunities involving sustainability.
The new CEO Vincent Clerc had the backing of the company’s board, which pointed him out as a leader of “strategic insight, ability to execute complex plans, and deliver long-term value to shareholders through attractive solutions for customers” and will now need to lead actions to achieve the sustainable goals set by Maersk.
The company is committed to reducing its carbon intensity by 50% in ocean products by 2030, with 25% of all cargo transported using green fuel. The estimate is also that terminals will have a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and a minimum of 30% of cargo transported by air will be sustainable aviation fuel. Additionally, warehouses and depots should have a minimum of 90% green operations. By following this path, the goal is to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2040.

“Companies are rethinking their supply chains in this new environment, looking for more stability and more support in their decarbonization journey. This presents an incredible business opportunity for Maersk, which we are all excited to seize. This will require us to stay the course of our strategy, fulfilling our digitalization and decarbonization roadmaps, while keeping a closer eye than ever on our operational excellence and performance. Company Awaits Arrival Of Ships Powered By Green Fuels
Maersk’s actions, as a provider in the green supply chain solutions sector, encompass maritime, air, contract logistics (warehouses and depots), and cold chain businesses. These products will utilize green technologies and solutions to ensure they provide real emissions reductions in the supply chain.
The company has ordered 19 container ships with dual-fuel engines that can operate on green methanol. Of these vessels, 12 will have a capacity of 16,000 TEU, powered by MAN G95 dual-fuel engines (main engine) and 16,000 m3 methanol tanks, to be delivered from 2024 to mid-2025; 6 will have a capacity of 17,000 TEU under the Danish flag (country of origin of Maersk), with delivery expected in 2025; and 1 vessel is a feeder type with a capacity of 1,900 TEU that should be delivered and operated as early as 2023.
According to the company, when all these ordered ships are deployed and have replaced older ships, there will be an annual CO2 emissions savings of about 2.3 million tons.
Sustainability In Ground Transport Is Also A Goal
In North America, Maersk aims to add 300 electric trucks to its network. The vehicles will be delivered between 2023 and 2025 for storage, distribution, and transportation in the so-called Performance Team.
Sustainability Drives Partnerships And Business
With the intention of producing up to 730,000 tons of e-methanol per year, Maersk has partnered with other giants. The companies involved in the agreement are CIMC ENRIC, European Energy, Green Technology Bank, Orsted, Proman, and WasteFuel. This production capacity is expected to supply the 12 carbon-neutral container ships already ordered by the Danes.
Methanol is a biofuel also known as methyl alcohol and methyl hydrate. It is produced from natural gas through what is called steam reforming or coal gasification, yielding synthesis gas primarily composed of CO, CO2, and H2.
“I look forward, together with the leadership team and all colleagues at Maersk around the world, to taking it to the next level, building on the very strong foundation we have with Soren (Skou – predecessor CEO of Vincent Clerc) at the helm and fulfilling our promises to customers, shareholders, and to society in general.”
“With the pandemic, and now with the war in Ukraine and an energy crisis upon us, there are many difficult challenges ahead; challenges that impact all of us and where Maersk can make a difference.”
