City in the Interior of São Paulo May Be Home to the Tallest Building in the World, with 170 Stories and 1 km in Height. Project, which Promises to Revitalize the City Center, Foresees the Creation of 5,000 Jobs and an Investment of R$ 2 Billion by the Private Sector.
A city in the interior of São Paulo may soon become the new center of global attention.
Sorocaba, with its 723,000 inhabitants, is planning a grand feat: the construction of a skyscraper of unprecedented proportions, promising to transform the urban landscape and boost the local economy.
But what is behind this project? Why did a municipality outside of the major urban centers decide to embark on a venture of this magnitude?

He sold his share for R$ 4 thousand, saw the company become a giant worth R$ 19 trillion, and missed the opportunity of a lifetime.
-
Elon Musk’s Starship megafrocket puts $8 billion at risk, raises alarms in the market, and could affect technology, mining, and space internet startups in the coming years.
-
Airfare prices may rise with increasing fuel costs, and the government is considering urgent measures to avoid a direct impact on the wallets of Brazilians.

Chocolate prices soar nearly 15% and become a luxury item for Easter 2026, with increases surpassing inflation and changes in Brazilian consumption habits.
The answer involves a combination of urban revitalization, political ambitions, and a billion-dollar proposal that promises to change the city’s direction.
According to the announcement made by Mayor Rodrigo Manga (Republicans), the future building will have an impressive 170 stories, reaching one kilometer in height.
The aim of the project is to revitalize the central area of Sorocaba, which has suffered from population decline and loss of attractiveness over the past decades.
According to the mayor, the building will have commercial and residential functions, in addition to attracting investments, boosting tourism, and creating 5,000 direct and indirect job openings.
A Project Inspired by the Burj Khalifa
The Sorocaba plan follows in the footsteps of another global icon: the Burj Khalifa, in the United Arab Emirates. Currently, this is the tallest building in the world, standing at 828 meters and featuring 163 stories.
Although Sorocaba still needs to overcome several barriers to realize its project, the mayor is confident in the city’s potential to host such an endeavor.
The tallest building currently in Brazil is the Yachthouse, located in Balneário Camboriú (SC), which stands at 290 meters and has 81 stories.
The new building in Sorocaba will be almost four times larger, completely transforming the city’s landscape and placing Brazil at the top of the list of the tallest skyscrapers in the world.
Challenges and Investments
To make this ambitious project feasible, Sorocaba is relying on private partnerships and an estimated investment of R$ 2 billion.
The city hall, in turn, will offer incentives, such as tax and grant exemptions, and will carry out a review of the Master Plan, which has not been updated in ten years, to remove height limits in the city center.
According to the mayor, this measure is part of a larger effort for urban revitalization, including the restoration of historic buildings and improvements in mobility.
The skyscraper project will also create unique infrastructure in the region, requiring modernization of the entire central area, which currently features mid-rise buildings with a maximum of 30 stories.
If everything goes as planned, Sorocaba will see an economic boom never before seen in the history of the municipality.
Next Steps and Interest from Companies
Although there is still no confirmation on which companies will be involved in the construction, Manga stated that some have already expressed interest and that details are being handled confidentially.
An engineering firm, not yet identified, has been tasked with the Master Plan review studies, and public hearings are expected to be held in the coming weeks to discuss the proposed changes.
A Futuristic Sorocaba
If the project comes to fruition, Sorocaba will be seen in a new light on the national and international stage.
The mega-building could attract a large volume of tourists, in addition to becoming a symbol of modernity and innovation for the city.
The revitalization of the center goes beyond the construction of the building; it includes the restoration of a historic train station, which will be integrated into the Intercity Train project, linking Sorocaba to the São Paulo capital.
This mobility plan will also be an important connection point between the businesses generated by the new venture and job opportunities for the city and region’s inhabitants.
Similar Plans in Other Cities
Interestingly, the idea of erecting the tallest building in the world on Brazilian soil has already been proposed in another city: São Paulo.
During the election campaign for the São Paulo mayoralty, then-candidate Pablo Marçal (PRTB) also promised to construct a building one kilometer high.
Marçal was not elected, but the mayor of Sorocaba invited him to take the position of Economic Development Secretary for the city starting in 2025.
This alliance could accelerate the project’s feasibility in Sorocaba.
Meanwhile, the city of Balneário Camboriú in Santa Catarina is also aiming for its own giant skyscraper: the Senna Tower, in honor of driver Ayrton Senna.
The building, which aims to reach 509 meters in height, could become the tallest residential building in the world, but will still be far from competing with the Sorocaba project if it is realized.
