Low Tides Expose 26 Petroglyphs in Oahu, Hawaii, Revealing Spiritual Messages and Ancestral Stories Tied to Ancient Hawaiians.

Ancient petroglyphs have emerged along the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, following changes in the tides. Locals believe these figures carry spiritual messages from their ancestors. They were carved into sandstone by ancient Hawaiians between 500 and 600 years ago.

However, Archaeology News suggests that the presence of these markings may be even older, possibly around 1,000 years.

Sculptures Hidden by Sand

Seasonal changes and weather patterns directly influence the appearance of these figures. The waves remove a thin layer of sand, revealing about 24 stick-figure human designs.

When algae cover the stones, the drawings gain vibrant green hues and can be seen along 35 meters of the coastline.

Most importantly, the entire panel of symbols is visible for the first time in nine years. Two visitors discovered the formation near a U.S. Army recreation center.

Although they hold historical value, these markings also serve a spiritual purpose for native Hawaiians.

Ancestral Messages

One of the figures, depicting arms raised and lowered, is interpreted as a symbol of sunrise and sunset. This image reinforces the connection between humans and the cycles of nature.

Between May and November, Pacific storms expose this ancient art. After that, the sands return and hide the petroglyphs once again.

Archaeologists have identified 26 markings on the panel. Eight of the 18 human figures appear to be male, as they depict genitalia. Two have fingers, a rarity in this type of recording in Hawaii, according to Archaeology News.

History and Conflicts

AP News points out that these symbols tell religious and ceremonial stories. For a local resident, the most striking figure represents the beginning and end of the day. Kila, an expert on the history of Waianae, told Yahoo News that the panel indicates the ocean level is rising.

Fox News suggests that some markings may represent birth records or significant events.

However, these discoveries bring to light ancient conflicts. Two visitors from an American military base found the petroglyphs. This reminded the community of the period when the military took over the territory in the 1930s and expelled Hawaiians.

A local stated to Yahoo News that they did not have permission to enter the land.

He reported that those who crossed the wall marking the territory were pushed or assaulted by the police.

Cultural Protection

Kila visited the site this week with permission from the U.S. Army. He intends to work with the community to protect the panel.

Even though the coastline is public, full access requires military affiliation, according to Archaeology News, which leads to disputes.

For the residents, the return of these stone sculptures reinforces the idea that ancestors continue to speak through time, reaffirming the rights of Hawaiians as the original guardians of the land.
