The Navy activated today (17/07) the Madeira Island Submarine Base, located in the Naval Complex of Itaguaí, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The base is part of the Submarine Development Program (Prosub), which aims to produce four conventional submarines and the first Brazilian submarine with nuclear propulsion. The Madeira Island Submarine Base (BSIM) will be the most modern naval base of the Brazilian Navy and will contribute to the preparation of naval assets, primarily submarines, in addition to providing logistical support to military organizations (OMs).
“It [base] is responsible for providing berthing facilities, infrastructure and administrative support to ships subordinated to the Command of the Submarine Force; security of areas and facilities at the Itaguaí Naval Complex, including maritime and land perimeters and common areas, in coordination with other OMs and companies headquartered in the complex, in addition to offering basic health support”, informs the Navy.
The commander of the Navy, Admiral Ilques Barbosa Junior, highlighted the strategic dimension of the naval base. “Our country's maximum strategic deterrence force will soon be here: conventional nuclear-powered submarines, diesel-electric submarines, as well as modern frigates and other means of support for strengthening the country's sovereignty and development,” said Ilques. , at the ceremony attended by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque.
In October last year, the Humaitá submarine was presented at the Itaguaí Naval Complex, the second of four diesel-electric submarines planned to act in defense of the Brazilian coast. In December of this year, the Humaitá is scheduled to be launched into the sea.
Prosub's first submarine, Riachuelo, was launched into the sea in 2018. The other two with diesel-electric propulsion, Tonelero and Angostura, are expected to be delivered in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
They are foreseen in the Submarine Development Program, launched in 2008 in a strategic partnership with France, which foresees an investment of R$ 35 billion.
In the construction of vessels, priority is given to components manufactured in Brazil. According to the Navy, the prosub strengthens several industrial sectors of strategic importance for national development.
