Teenager Faces Large Fish In SC Pond Using Light Equipment And Stars Capture Marked By Extreme Effort.

A 13-year-old teenager, a resident of Chapecó, in western Santa Catarina, starred in a contest lasting over an hour with a 21 kg jaú in a pond in the municipality of Guatambu.

The fish’s resistance in the water was estimated at 42 kg, practically equivalent to the student’s own weight, which is currently 46 kg.

Even using light equipment not typically recommended for this type of capture, he was able to hook, control, photograph, and release the animal after the fight.

Battle With 21 Kg Jaú Mobilizes Young Fisherman

The student Anthony Vinícius Venâncio spent the day at a pond known in the area for hosting jaú specimens that can reach 50 kg.

According to him, the intention from the beginning was to have a big contest with one of the fish considered giants in the area.

Throughout the day, however, successive attempts failed.

Anthony reports that the jaú even nibbled at the bait, but did not stay on the hook.

Faced with the failures, he decided to change his strategy.

“I lost several times until I switched to a bigger hook and used a whole sausage as bait,” the teenager said.

From this change, the fish finally engaged in a contest that turned into a long and exhausting battle.

Strategies On The Pond Margin Attract The Fish

With the new set of hook and bait, the student began to walk along the pond’s edge, keeping the rod in hand to create movement in the line and attract the jaú’s attention.

The idea was to provoke the predator, simulating moving food.

“I was walking along the edge, moving the line and provoking the fish,” he reported.

At a certain moment, the strategy worked: the jaú pulled hard, and Anthony was able to hook it.

From then on, a battle of endurance began.

The fish sought depth and tried to hide in the pond’s structures, while the young man worked the line to prevent it from breaking or the animal from escaping.

Light Equipment Increases The Risk Of Capture

The challenge intensified because Anthony used a Evolution G3 rod, classified as light and not typically recommended for fighting large fish.

This mismatch between the fish size and the equipment required even more care from the young fisherman.

At several points during the contest, the fish sought refuge in structures on the bottom, which increased the risk of line breakage.

To avoid losing the catch, the teenager began to hold the line directly with his hands, instead of just working with the rod and reel.

This option provided more control over the jaú but also exposed the young man to injuries.

With the back and forth of the struggle, the tension in the line caused cuts on Anthony’s fingers, who nonetheless kept battling until he managed to dominate the fish.

“It was a back and forth with the fish and always that fear of it escaping,” he remembered.

More Than An Hour Until The Jaú Enters The Passaguá

According to the student, the fight lasted more than an hour, always alternating moments when the jaú seemed to get tired and others when it regained strength and pulled hard again.

The weight of 21 kg of the fish, combined with its resistance in the water, made the physical effort approach the adolescent’s own capacity.

When the jaú finally showed signs of fatigue, Anthony and a friend he met at the fishing spot took advantage of the gap to bring the fish close to the shore and place it in the passaguá.

“When it gave a gap, we passed the passaguá. Lifting the beast was complicated because even out of the water, it kept thrashing. It was a hassle to get a photo,” the young man recalled.

Still, they managed to capture the moment with a picture of the jaú already contained and the exhausted young fisherman after the effort.

Release Of The Fish Moves Young Fisherman

Although the dispute was long, Anthony claims that the most memorable moment of the entire experience was not the photo, but the return of the fish to the pond.

He entered the water alongside the friend who helped him catch it to support the jaú in the release process.

The animal was held for a while in the correct position, until it regained its movements and swam back to the bottom.

“I went into the water with a friend I made at the fishing spot, who helped me take out the jaú. Alone it was almost impossible to lift it. It was one of the strongest fish I have ever caught,” he stated.

The moment reinforced the meaning of sport fishing, where the focus is on the contest, the record, and the return of the fish in good condition.

Family Tradition Keeps Youngster Close To Sport Fishing

Anthony’s relationship with fishing began early.

He had his first contact with the activity at five years old, encouraged by his mother, Maristela Gomes, 55, who works as a massage therapist.

The tradition, according to the family, originates from the maternal grandfather, Alfredo Gomes, who has already passed away.

The student recounts that, in his childhood, outings were common to fish farms and camping trips, often alongside his mother and grandfather.

At these locations, he began to familiarize himself with rods, lines, and different types of bait.

“My mom always enjoyed fishing, both at the camps and in the rivers with my grandfather. When I was little, we went to fish farms a lot until sport fishing came up, and we started visiting the fishing spots,” he reported.

Over time, the practice evolved into sport fishing in structured fish farms, where the capture and release of large fish became part of the family’s routine.

Today, even as a young person, Anthony already accumulates stories of battles with large fish.

The recent contest with the 21 kg jaú stands out due to the strength of the animal, estimated at 42 kg, and the unfavorable conditions of the used equipment, which required technique, patience, and constant attention.

Amid the stories he collects by the water’s edge, a curiosity arises: what will be the next big challenge for this young fisherman in Santa Catarina?
