Expansion Marks The Company’s Commitment To Sustainability, Adding 400 New Electric Vehicles In 2023
The e-commerce company Mercado Livre, aligned with its environmental responsibility and focused on minimizing the ecological impacts of its operations, announced the significant increase of its electric vehicle fleet in Brazil. The company will add more than 400 electric vehicles to its logistics, raising the total to around 700 vehicles in the country.
Doubling The Electric Fleet And Expanding Sustainable Mobility
Mercado Livre is committed to expanding its presence throughout Latin America, with a parallel increase of the electric fleet in Mexico and Chile. As a result, the company will have more than 1,000 electric vehicles in operation across the region, reinforcing its position as one of the largest electric mobility fleets in Latin America.
The expansion was made possible by issuing a sustainable bond, worth US$ 400 million, raised in 2021. This action financed triple impact projects: reducing the environmental footprint through the use of renewable energies, energy efficiency, sustainable packaging, and mobility, as well as regeneration and conservation of biomes; financial inclusion, facilitating credit for micro and small businesses and entrepreneurs; and social development and empowerment, boosting education to reduce the digital divide and include youth in the Latin American job market.

New Partnerships And Systemic Challenges
Complementing the electric fleet, the company is also investing in natural gas-powered trucks, which emit about 18% less carbon than diesel. Currently, the company has 139 natural gas-powered trucks in Brazil.
To further strengthen its sustainability vision, Mercado Livre announced a partnership with Newlab, an international innovation platform headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay. This collaboration aims to accelerate the sustainable transition of the company’s logistics network with innovative mobility solutions. The focus is on creating the Studio Low-Carbon Logistics, developing and testing prototypes to incorporate emerging low carbon dioxide (CO2) emission technologies, mainly for vehicles used in last-mile transport.
“The rapid growth of Mercado Livre in Latin America challenges us to be increasingly efficient in managing and reducing our environmental impact, especially regarding sustainable mobility. We are excited about the progress made and, above all, committed to accelerating the impact of our mobility, renewable energy, and material circularity initiatives,” highlights Guadalupe Marin, Director of Sustainability at Mercado Livre in Latin America.
Beyond sustainable logistics, the company is undertaking other actions with a strong positive environmental impact. Mercado Livre consumes 100% clean energy in 21 logistics operations and offices; all of its packaging is recyclable, reusable, or compostable; and through its Regenera America program, the company has invested over 10 million dollars in regeneration and conservation projects of iconic Latin American biomes, with more than 10 million trees in the restoration process.
