Creation of New Jobs and Growth of E-commerce
Fernando Yunes mentioned in the InfoMoney live stream that e-commerce still has a 10.5%-11% penetration in total retail in Brazil. It’s still low. “We went from 5% at the beginning of the pandemic to a rapid jump to 11%, as if all people and companies were forced to buy/sell online. It’s like we took the year 2030 and pulled it to 2020,” said the executive.
“The number of users, both on the customer side and the seller side, has increased dramatically, leading to e-commerce penetration in Brazil rising from 5% to 10%. This year it stands at 11%. The global average is 18%. The United States is at 25%. China is at 40%. The number of companies that have yet to enter the marketplace is still large. (…) And there are still many internet users who are not e-commerce buyers. We remain optimistic. By the end of this year alone, we will hire 6,000 own employees and 2,500 third-party workers. That’s 8,500 new jobs in four months. It shows our commitment and confidence in what lies ahead,” he concluded.

It may seem like an exaggeration, but it’s not: your financial life can remain weak even with a high income if you don’t cut expensive debts, invest half of the increase for 12 months, and turn R$ 2,000 or R$ 3,000 monthly into assets.

New Sellers on the Mercado Livre Platform
Yunes highlighted that the entry of new sellers on the Mercado Livre platform was strong in the second quarter and continues at that pace, both for small companies and large brands. Additionally, the executive mentioned that the group is always looking to cater to new segments, such as the newly launched supermarket operation.
The executive cited the investments that have been made by Mercado Livre in the country. “We started the year with three distribution centers and will end with eight or more, and we may even announce something more by the end of the year,” he said. Yunes emphasized some competitive advantages of ML over the competition, such as same-day delivery service for many ZIP codes.
