New Factory In Mato Grosso do Sul Promises To Boost State Cellulose Production, Generating Millions Of Tons Per Year And Creating Thousands Of Jobs In The Cellulose Valley.

The cellulose production capacity in Mato Grosso do Sul is projected to double in the coming years, consolidating the region as the “Cellulose Valley“. The key factor will be the construction of a new factory located in Inocência, which received authorization for operation from the state government last Friday, the 10th.

Cellulose Production In Mato Grosso Do Sul Is Expected To Reach 10 Million Tons

The Chilean company Arauco announced that the production capacity of the new factory in Inocência will be 2.5 million tons of cellulose per year, with operations expected to start in 2028. Even before the official authorization, Mato Grosso do Sul was already preparing to take the national lead in the sector, driven by the start of operations at Suzano’s factory in Ribas do Rio Pardo, in addition to the existing ones in Três Lagoas, belonging to Suzano and Eldorado.

The combined production of these companies in Mato Grosso do Sul is expected to exceed 10 million tons of cellulose annually, surpassing the 5.5 million produced currently by Bahia, the national leader until now. This increase in production is positioning the state as the new Cellulose Valley.

Additionally, Bracell, globally recognized for its production of specialty dissolving pulp, has also been investing in the state. Since late 2021, the company has been developing forestry cultivation areas in two cities in Mato Grosso do Sul to supply its factories in other regions of the country. The formation of this cellulose cluster, which includes some of the largest and most efficient companies in the sector, is transforming the economic base of the state, consolidating it as a vital center for the cellulose industry.

New Factory In Mato Grosso Do Sul Is Expected To Generate Thousands Of Jobs

With industrial expansion, Mato Grosso do Sul strengthens its agricultural vocation by exploring forestry, essential to supply the cellulose industries, adding value to local raw materials, which are transformed into a crucial input for various products. Governor Eduardo Riedel (PSDB) emphasizes that the economic transformation of the state will require intense collaboration between public and private entities but anticipates the creation of numerous jobs for the local population.

Riedel highlights that the state has been seeking to develop projects in partnership with the private sector to invest in infrastructure, such as highways and railways, aiming to provide competitive conditions for these enterprises and generate more job opportunities. He believes that despite the challenges that will arise in the next four years, the opportunities created will significantly benefit the state.

Carlos Altimiras, CEO of Arauco Brazil, reported that earthworks for the new factory in Inocência are scheduled to begin this month of July. According to him, the construction, when it reaches its peak, is expected to generate up to 12,000 jobs, representing a challenge for the Chilean company in terms of labor hiring.

Brazil Is A Leader In Cellulose Production And Extraction

In 2022, Brazil consolidated its position as the world’s largest producer and exporter of cellulose, achieving historic marks in the forestry activity and strengthening its leadership in the global market. The country recorded an impressive annual revenue of R$ 250 billion.

According to data from the Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá), the national cellulose production in 2022 was 25 million tons, representing a 10.9% increase compared to the previous year. Exports also grew, with a 22% increase, totaling 19.1 million tons.

Currently, Brazil maintains nearly 10 million hectares of cultivated areas with forests dedicated to production and 6 million hectares allocated to the conservation of native forests, demonstrating the country’s commitment to sustainability in its industrial practices.
